Judith “Judy” Vrazel passed away Tuesday, September 5, 2017, at the age of 90. She was born January 5, 1927, in Fayetteville, Texas, the second child and only daughter of the late Joseph and Sophie Kovar. She grew up in the Fayetteville/Ellinger area where the family farmed during the Depression Years. She married Emil Vrazel on May 20, 1947, following his service in World War II. Emil and Judy lived briefly in San Antonio before making Austin their permanent home in 1948. They were among the original members of St. Louis Catholic Church which Judy attended until failing health in 2015.
Judy was a typical 1950’s homemaker caring for her home and family with all the associated chores, including sewing her daughters’ clothing often from handmade patterns. She took in outside work to supplement the family income. Following Emil’s sudden death in 1971, she began working for the Austin Independent School District food service in the school cafeteria and later at the Carruth Administration Building. She retired in 1991 after 20 years of service.
In retirement, Judy enjoyed cooking and baking, especially bread, pies and cookies. She also loved caring for her flowers and Wednesday mornings with the St. Louis Senior Friendship Group.
She was preceded in death by her husband; daughter, Barbara; brothers, Pete Kovar, Sr, Edwin Kovar, and George Kovar. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn and Edward Burshnick, step grandsons James and Michael Burshnick (wife Sharyl), three great grandchildren, loving nieces and nephews.
Visitation is scheduled for 4 pm Sunday, September 10, followed by recitation of the Rosary at 5 pm, at Cook Walden Funeral Home, 6100 N. Lamar. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 am, Monday, September 11, at St. Louis Catholic Church with Fr. Doug Jeffers officiating. Burial will be at Assumption Cemetery.
The family is deeply grateful to the staff of Colonial Gardens, Kindred Hospice, and St. Louis Homebound Ministry for their care and support. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Louis Catholic Church or to a charity of one’s choice.
May her soul and those of all the faithful departed rest in peace.
