John is preceded in death by his loving parents, Leo Schaefer of Bastrop and Inez Shackelford of Austin.
John is survived by his only son, John Stephens Schaefer and his wife Victoria; grandsons, Harrison and Brent Schaefer; brother Tom Schaefer; sister Jan Payne and husband Buck; numerous cousins, nephews and a niece.
As a longtime resident of Austin, John leaves behind a world of family and friends whose lives he touched and to whom he loved. John was courageous, helpful and determined. He will be remembered for his twinkling blue eyes, his passionate interests and his devotedness to his mother, Inez.
In lieu of flowers, you may consider honoring John with a donation to the National Rifle Association (NRA) or to The Texas Autism Project (TAP).
A visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 7, 2013, with a memorial service following at 6 p.m. at Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel, 3125 North Lamar.
