Jo Ann is the daughter of Thurston Joseph "Joe" Bland and Kathryn Brown Bland and the sister of Kay Bland Oliver, all of whom predeceased her. She attended school at Wooldridge Elementary School, O'Henry Junior High School, and Austin High School. She pursued her higher education at Lindenwood University and The University of Texas at Austin where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.
She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and she thrived and excelled in each role. Jo Ann was an active mother, serving as St. Austin's School room mother multiple times, Brownie troop leader, and school fund raiser for her children and others. She also served the community as a member of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre, the Junior League, the Settlement Club, and the Fleur de League. She made her home so welcoming and fun that extended family and friends often referred to it as Camp Jo Ann. She was always willing to extend a helping hand. Jo Ann's love for countless friends, neighbors, and family is beyond measure and she will be remembered most for her acts of kindness and the genuine delight of spending time with you.
