James W. Newman

Jim’s formative years were spent in Ohio, graduating from Ohio Wesleyan in 1937. During World War II, he was proud to have worked at Cincinnati Milling and Machine in support of the war effort. His professional career was spent at IBM, beginning in Lexington, Kentucky and then moving to Texas for the upstart of IBM Austin. Jim was a lifelong Episcopalian, serving the St. Matthew's family in a very distinguished manner. Notable service included being a representative on the Diocese of Texas for the Anglican Fellowship of Prayer, a lifetime member of the Brotherhood of St. Andrews, a founder of the St. Matthew's Memorial Garden, and a board member of Austin Area Interfaith Ministry. Jim was passionate about the sport of tennis, playing into his 80s, as well as listening to Big Band music.

Jim is preceded in death by his wife, Betty, his sister, Katherine, and his eldest son, Jimmy. He is survived by his sons Jeff, of Abilene, Bruce and wife Janet Newman of Austin, Mark Newman and Terry Newman of Austin and daughter Cathy Newman, also of Austin; grandchildren Sarah and husband John, Matthew and fiancé Leslie, Devon, Brittney and husband Sean, Austin and fiancé Becky, Michael and Kayla; great-grandchildren Talyn, Luke, Jaxon, and Ty; and brother-in-law, Oscar Marsh and wife Janet of Waverly, Ohio.

Jim will be greatly missed by all those whose lives he touched. The family gives special thanks to the wonderful caregivers at his home, Brenda, Marlene, Dee and Cheryl for their devoted and loving care. They also thank the staff of Emeritus Senior Living at North Austin, and Hospice Austin for their devoted loving care in his last few months.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from 6 o’clock until 7 o’clock in the evening on Friday, the 18th of January, 2013, at Cook Walden Funeral Home. Friends and family are invited to celebrate Jim’s life at a memorial service Saturday, the 19th of January, at 2 o’clock in the afternoon at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, 8134 Mesa. A reception will follow in Huffman Hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations and customary remembrances are made to St. Matthew's Permanent Endowment Fund or Hospice Austin.
