Jim was born in Portsmouth, Ohio to William and Evelyn Anderson. His childhood was filled with paper routes, scouting, tennis, and myriad trips to the emergency room for the kinds of injuries one incurs while living for play and adventure.
Jim graduated from Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina in 1972. At Furman, he earned a degree in business administration, brotherhood in Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, and the love of a brilliant young woman named Christine Warren. After Jim's two years of active duty in the Army, the two were married in 1974 and lived many happy years in Columbia at the University of South Carolina where they each worked toward graduate degrees. Career futures brought Jim and Chris to Austin in 1978, which remained home until Jim's death.
Jim was an educator, teaching at McCallum, Austin, and Anderson High Schools. Jim was a friend, extending his generous spirit to all who knew him. Jim was a brother, to sisters with whom he grew up and to friends who became family. But most notably to those that will miss him most deeply, Jim was a father. Jim challenged his children, Meagan and James, to work hard, love hard, and laugh often. He instilled in them a confidence that they could be and do anything they wanted—and they continue to believe him.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Christine Warren Anderson, and by his parents. He is survived by children Meagan (Bill) Longley and James Rainier Anderson II; granddaughter Evelyn Anne Longley; sisters Martha (Chuck) Miker, Beth (Jim) Hallan, Kim (Bob) Noë, Colleen (John) Moore, and Betty Warren. Jim's nieces and nephews, Sarah, BJ, Alle, Beau, Mary, Chip, North, Nikki, Bill, Michelle, Daniel, Collin, Brigit, Claire, and Doug will remember their uncle fondly, mostly for his raucous repartee and his delight at the cocktail hour.
A memorial celebration will be held on Jim's birthday, July 16, 2015, from 6:30-8:30 at 4100 Edwards Mountain Drive in Austin, Texas. Please come and go as you wish; remembrances will be shared at 7:30. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to the James R. Anderson Fund at the Austin Community Foundation, 4315 Guadalupe, Suite 300, Austin, TX 78751 or austincf.org.
