Dear Aunt Margaret and all you kids,  I'm writing to send you strength and love at this difficult time.  I've been to half a dozen funerals since Dad died and the grieving process has been slow for me.  May your thoughts of Uncle Jack soon turn to happy ones. Eulogy -delivered for Jack Dyer by his youngest son in the presence of loved ones,  Dec 07, 2006 - St. Ignatius Catholic Church, Austin Texas.    I'd like to read an excerpt from a poem I came across that I thought was very touching.... It begins...    I read of a man who stood to speak  At the funeral of a friend.  He referred to the dates on his tombstone  From beginning ..to the end.    He noted that first came the date of birth  And spoke the next date after that ..with tears,  But he said what matters most of all  Was the dash -- in between those years.    For that dash represents all the time  That our loved one spent alive on Earth...  And now only those who knew him and loved him,  Truly know what that little line is worth.    You see it matters not, how much we own;  The automobiles..the houses.. the cash,  What matters is how we LIVE and how we LOVE,  ...And how we spend our dash.                    -- author unknown.    I'd like to speak a moment about how the man I proudly call my Dad so GLORIOUSLY spent HIS dash.    I can only begin to describe him by speaking of his beginnings...  Our dad was dealt a very tough hand in life shortly after he came into the world.  As a child, he was orphaned and was forced to endure all of the hardships of being without parents.. (..one can only imagine..)..  all during the repercussions of the Great Depression.  ..but the hand he was dealt, he played better than ANYONE could have.    He NEVER succumbed to a life that for many, with a beginning like that, could easily have led to:  Self-pity.. no.  Dead-end jobs..no.  Alcohol abuse.. no.  Surrounding oneself with the wrong influences in general.. no.    Instead, he led an HONORABLE life with.. integrity..virtue..and love.    Undoubtedly, his most glorious triumph:  Marrying the most wonderful woman. ..A wife of qualities that any man could ever hope for, and unquestionably the best possible mother for his children.  Along with Mom, he led the way working HARD and DILIGENTLY to raise a family of SIX! and not just to 'get by'.. but to make sure that it was a home that was filled with the love and security that he never had in his early years.    I think his most shining moments -  I'm sure my siblings would agree -  were that of Christmas time, where he saw to it that we always had a Christmas day better than he EVER had.    If anyone were to say that our Dad led a common, ordinary life and was not a man of legend... I would have to correct them.  He IS a man of legend... WE are his legend - All six of us! - his children (and our kids).    His family represents the SHINING LIGHT to everything he had to overcome in his earliest years.    We are his pride and joy - that, I know.    For that, I think we have but one job of our own... and that is to HONOR him by making the very best that we can of OUR lives  ...so that his legend may live on.    We can all recall moments where he has told us that his kids make him proud.  Well, Dad, ...It is YOU that makes us proud!  - to have a father who spent HIS dash, in between HIS years, so gloriously and so self-less-ly as you have for us.  We Love You...  You will ALWAYS be in our Hearts...      Rest in Peace.    (one final word) And to our Dear Mom...  Where all of Dad's greatness came to us in all it's RAW beauty,  You - with all of your kindness and touch of your heart - have always been the strength that REFINED his greatness for the family every step along the way.    None of us can begin to imagine the loss of a spouse (none of us have experienced it.)  ..but such is life, that with every loss is a new beginning;  A new chapter, where although at times so different than the one before, it comes with it's own set of joys where we can take comfort in carrying over the experiences and the cherished memories from the chapter prior...   And... here's the GOOD part:  Your family is with you ALWAYS!  We love you.
