Dr. Hayne James Sheffield, Jr. passed away on April 29, 2022, after suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease for several years. Hayne was a native Texan, born in Corpus Christi on September 20, 1941. He was born during a hurricane at a catholic hospital. The nuns put his father to work boarding up windows during the hours before his birth.
When he was a child, Hayne moved to Moonshine Hill, Texas, and grew up in the oilfields his father managed. At seventeen, Hayne had an accident and broke his back. He was told by doctors that he would not be able to walk again. But with the help of his parents, he proved them wrong. He walked with a cane for the rest of his life, but never let it slow him down—skiing, rafting, climbing mountains. He did it all.
Hayne graduated from Humble High School in 1960 and was voted “Mr. Humble High” by his classmates. He also raised a Grand Champion Steer, which led to a lifelong love of ranching. He owned a ranch in Richards, Texas for more than forty years.
Hayne received his B.A. in Zoology with honors in 1965 from the University of Texas at Austin. In 1969, he graduated with high honors from the University of Texas medical school at John Sealy Hospital in Galveston. After an internship at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin, Hayne returned to Galveston for his residency training in ophthalmology. Serving the population of the northern Houston metropolitan area, Hayne began his practice at Northwest Hospital in 1973. In 1980, he moved his family to Tomball and opened a private practice which continued until his retirement at the end of 2016. Hayne was an avid reader and lifelong learner. He enjoyed playing the piano, hiking in Colorado, astronomy, bird watching, traveling, and spending time with family.
Hayne is survived by his wife of 53 years, Patty Lou, and their three children Amanda (spouse, Michael Morris), Luke (spouse, Brenda Salazar Sheffield), and Jennifer (spouse Michael Freel). He loved spending time with his seven grandchildren: Caleb and Mollie Morris; Isabela and Nicolas Sheffield; Elliott, Hope, and Leighton Freel. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws, and cousins. Hayne was preceded in death by his parents Hayne and Gene Sheffield. Hayne’s father was one of nine children, which meant Sheffield Christmas and Easter parties were lively, crowded affairs. Hayne enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren perform at those Sheffield parties.
The city of Tomball recognized Hayne with a proclamation on November 16, 2016, with the honor of “Hayne Sheffield Day.” During his forty-three-year career as a doctor, Hayne treated countless patients, never rushing an appointment and always working toward the best solution. Hayne worked with a dedicated staff who were more like family members than employees.
Hayne was a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Harris County Medical Society, and the Texas Medical Association. He was a physician emeritus in ophthalmology with Houston Eye Associates. Hayne was an active member of Tomball United Methodist Church for many years.
A visitation for Hayne will be held on Friday, May 13, 2022, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Tomball United Methodist Church, 1603 Baker Drive, Tomball, Texas 77375. The funeral service will take place on Friday, May 13, 2022, at 1:00 PM at Tomball United Methodist Church, 1603 Baker Drive, Tomball, Texas 77375. A graveside service will be held on Friday, May 13, 2022, at 2:30 PM at Rosewood Memorial Park, 2602 S Houston Avenue, Humble, Texas 77396.
