Hallie Slaughter Casey

Born in San Antonio, Texas on March 6, 1945, Hallie was the second of five children, born to George Owen Slaughter and Hallie Groos Slaughter. In 1957, she met the man who was to be the love of her life, Shelby Tim Casey. She was introduced to him as "Sweet Hallie," a name that fit her throughout her life. They married on January 27th, 1968 at The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Austin.

After attending S.F. Austin High School in Austin, she studied political science at the University of Texas at Austin. Her time in college was enriched by her membership in the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, and she was thrilled to receive her 50 year pin earlier this year.

Throughout her life, Hallie had an unrelenting passion for gardens, plants, and the natural world. Her passion for horticulture took her on travels throughout Europe, Asia, and Central America where she relished touring gardens and experiencing vast varieties of flora and fauna. Having spent much of her childhood on her family's farm on Brodie Lane, she developed a love of landscapes and the outdoors. She fed this love throughout her life by enjoying the family ranch in Dripping Springs.

Hallie spent her early professional career working with her father at the Slaughter's Meat Packing Company, managing the office. She later merged her bookkeeping and managerial experience with her horticultural interests at Gardens where she became part owner, and then later lent her skills to John Mayfield's architectural and design firm.

Her family was the center of her life. As a matriarch, she was a pillar of love, compassion, and strength. She was a devoted sister, daughter, cousin, aunt, mother, and grandmother. Her annual calendar revolved greatly around the family celebrations of Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas as well as turning every available birthday party into a true event. She welcomed distant cousins and acquaintances, close friends and family, and often a horde of dogs to these events with laughter, grace, and hospitality. The large holidays were not the only events to receive her celebratory spirit: she was known to make an occasion out of making venison sausage or even just Sunday morning breakfast tacos.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, S. Tim Casey; her sons and their families Christopher Casey & Carrie Rogers Casey, David Casey & Amy Regitz Casey; her grandchildren, Hallie J. Casey, Joanna Casey, Owen Casey, Caleb Casey, Liam Casey; as well as her brother Richard Groos Slaughter, Sr. and sister Elisabeth Slaughter Mooney.

Visitation hours will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 2nd at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home on North Lamar.

Services honoring her life will be held at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 3rd, 2017 followed by a brief reception. In lieu of flowers the family requests a donation to the Garden Conservancy, Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve, or Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.
