Gloria went to be with her Heavenly Father on February 11, 2019. Gloria was born in Taylor, Texas to Abel Gutierrez and Lucille Castro Gutierrez on April 26, 1931. On October 21, 1950, Gloria married Antonio F. Moreno and together, they celebrated their lives as one for 68 years. She and the love of her life Tony shared together the joy of traveling the world, volunteering at Manos de Cristo Presbyterian Ministry, and attending Covenant Presbyterian Church.
Gloria graduated from Austin H.S., received her Bachelors in Education from UT in 1969 and her Masters in 1979. She enjoyed 28 wonderful years doing what she'd always dreamed of, teaching elementary school and being a secondary school counselor and visiting teacher with the Austin Public Schools. Gloria was active in Texas State Teachers Association, Austin Classroom TEA, and the Retired Teachers Legislative Committee. In 2006, she was an AISD Hall of Fame recipient and in 2010, she received the City of Austin Distinguished Service Award for being a Mexican American Trailblazer in Education.
Gloria is survived by her loving husband Tony Moreno, her children Judy Moreno Funk and husband Richard of Austin, Anthony J. Moreno and wife Sera of Temple, sister and brother-in-law Emma and Larry Thirstrup of Slidell, La., grandchildren Richard A. Funk and wife Rachael, Ryan D. Funk, Olivia Griggs and husband Adrian, Anthony R. Moreno and wife Kate, and Travis M. Moreno. Great grandchildren are Reese and Vivienne Funk, Wilhelmina Funk, and Samuel A. Moreno.
A Memorial Service celebrating the life of Gloria Moreno will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 3003 Northland Dr., on Sunday, March 3, at 2:00 o'clock. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations in Gloria's name be sent to Manos de Cristo, 4911 Harmon Ave., Austin TX 78751 or the Alzheimer's Association.
The family wishes to thank the directors, Ray and Charlotte Atkinson and the entire staff of Avalon Memory Care in Cedar Park and Hospice Austin and Nurse Shelly Robichaux for their unfailing dedication, love and service to Gloria and her family.
