Gene Spence Gene Spence, 77, beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 8, 2008 after a long battle with cancer and kidney disease. He fought every medical battle courageously and with great optimism. Born and raised in East Texas, he attended Sam Houston State University, served in the US Air Force and was honorably discharged. He moved to Houston, Texas where he worked for Humble Oil & Refining Company. There he met the love of his life, Betty Lynn Walter. They married and moved to Anchorage, Alaska with Humble Oil, 3 years later returned to Houston, and then moved to Austin in 1967. Gene was a prominent Real Estate Broker in Austin for more than 30 years, retiring in 1998. Many of his clients became close friends. He served on many civic boards including St. Andrews Episcopal School, The Austin Symphony, and The Austin Board of Realtors Executive Board. He was also a member of the Vestry at St Matthews Episcopal Church and All Saints Episcopal Church and the West Austin Rotary. Gene is survived by his wife of 50 years, Betty Walter Spence, his daughters and sons-in-law Lori and Lamar Galloway and their son William Seibert, Jennifer and Doug Blount and their daughters Samantha and Amelia and his son, Greg Spence. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, April 11, 2008 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 12, 2008 at Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd followed by the burial at Austin Memorial Park.
