Gary was born on May 1, 1953 in Austin to parents Dr. Billy and Carolyn Johnson. Gary lived in south Austin his entire life and graduated from Travis High School and attended the University of Texas at Austin where he studied finance and journalism. While attending the University, Gary wrote for the Daily Texan and was a member of Sigma Delta Chi, the professional journalistic society.
Gary began to write at a very early age and created, edited and printed a Travis Heights newsletter when he was in elementary school. Gary continued that love for writing throughout his whole life; producing, editing and writing many newsletters and articles for the Austin American Statesman as the south Austin neighborhood reporter as well the South Austin neighborhood newsletter.
Gary’s true passion was his love of liberty and freedom and being a lifetime member of the Libertarian Party. He served tirelessly in many elected offices for the party including: National Secretary, secretary for the Texas Libertarian Party, and national credentials committee member. An original member of The Torch Club, Gary contributed to the price of liberty by supporting the national and state party financially.
Principled and uncompromising, Gary had been a Libertarian candidate for: The Austin School Board, Austin Mayor and the Texas House of Representatives. Additionally, he served as editor of the Austin Libertarian newsletter, Travis County chair and county secretary.
Gary regularly produced local television talk shows on Austin Public Access television and voiced opinions often on local radio shows.
Gary was a kind and softspoken individual who believed individual freedom was the most important principle. He had courage and common sense and was a true activist for the community of Austin.
A graveside service to celebrate Gary’s life and a gathering of friends will take place on Wednesday, March 23rd at 11:00 a.m. at the Cook Walden/Forest Oaks Memorial Park, 6300 West William Cannon Drive, Austin, Texas, 78749.
