Esther Stewart Cooper died peacefully on February 7, 2005 after enjoying a full life of 95 years. She grew up in Victoria and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1931 with a B.S. in Home Economics and a minor in Science. After teaching in Thorndale, Lexington and George West, Texas, she married and moved to Iowa, Louisiana, where she raised her family and taught both high school science and second grade in the Calcasieu Parish school system for more than 20 years. Esther loved teaching, especially second grade, and had a lifelong love of learning sparked by curiosity about the world. She enjoyed singing and playing the piano, painting, traveling, doing crossword puzzles, gardening, and rescuing birds. She was proud of her family, devoted to her church, and gracious and generous to all. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Seth Cooper, Milam County, Texas, her younger brother and sister-in-law, Ollie and Winnie Stewart, Ingleside, Texas, and her parents, Dr. Ollie Reed Stewart and Emma Over, Sligo, Pennsylvania. She is survived by her children, Dr. Seth Cooper and wife Suzanne, Nashville, Tennessee, and Betty Cooper, Austin, Texas, her youngest brother, John Stewart and wife Lois, Westerville, Ohio, and granddaughters, Claire Elise Cooper, Nashville, Tennessee, and Sarah Cooper Nickoloff, Chicago, Illinois. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 11th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 North Lamar. Graveside services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, February 12, 2005 at Little River Cemetery near Cameron, Texas. The family wishes to express appreciation to all the staff of Brighton Gardens for their supportive and compassionate care over the past four years as well as to the loving caregivers at Spring House.
