Elwood Montel Hood, Jr, a long time Dentist from Orange, Texas, passed away peacefully to be with The Lord while surrounded by his family on January 11, 2014 at the age of 92. He was born on September 11,1921 in Port Arthur, Texas to his parents Elwood and Agnes Patin Hood. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Port Arthur and then served in the U.S Army in the Radar unit in the Aleutians Islands in World War II. After he returned from the service he married the love of his life Dagma Shepherd Hood. He graduated from The University of Texas at Austin and then received his Dental Degree from The University of Texas Dental School in Houston. After graduation, they moved to Orange Texas to and open a dental practice and raise a family where he practiced from August of 1952 until 1988. He was a founding member of Ducks Unlimited and served as President as well as on the Board of Directors. He was also selected Sportsman of the year in 1989. He served as President and Treasurer of the Southeast Texas Dental Society and was a member of the Rotary Club. He had a huge heart for serving others and had a kind and giving spirit. He loved to hunt and fish and furthered a family heritage of cooking gumbo and other Cajun dishes. He loved to tell stories about his time in Lafayette, family gatherings and many great stories of his friends in Orange.
He moved with his wife to Austin in November of 2004 to be near his 3 daughters and became a member of Tarrytown United Methodist Church. Prior to that he had been a member of First United Methodist Church in Orange, Texas for many years. Faith was an important part of his life.
Preceding Elwood in death were his parents Elwood and Agnes Hood, his wife Dagma Hood, his brother George Melvin Hood. He is survived by his daughters Debbie Hood Flanagan and husband Dan of Austin, Nancy Hood of Austin, and Lori Hood Holt and husband David Holt of Austin.
Also, surviving is his granddaughter Lindsey Holt whom he loved with all his heart. He is also survived by his sisters Patsy Hood LeGrande and her husband Paddy from Beaumont, Texas, Bobbye Hood and close friend Mary Cato from Fort Worth, Texas and Belva Hood from Houston as well as many other family members. He loved his family and friends and will be missed by many.
A memorial service will be held at Tarrytown United Methodist Church, 2601 Exposition Boulevard on Friday January 17, 2014 at 11:00. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Tarrytown United Methodist Church, or Austin Hospice.
