Elizabeth Yeaman, a beloved figure known for her love, compassion, and community spirit, passed away on November 9, 2024. Born on September 14, 1935, in Fort Worth, Texas, she led a remarkable life that inspired many.
Elizabeth's journey began in Corpus Christi and continued in Austin, where she graduated from the University of Texas in 1958 with a degree in economics, breaking barriers as the only woman in her graduating class. It was at a square dancing event that she met Verner Swenson, marking the start of a significant chapter in her life. They married in 1958, started a family in 1961 and loved each other for the remainder of his life. She excelled as a defense contractor for Tracor and later dedicated herself to improving lives through the Office of Economic Opportunity, a program started under President Johnson’s War on Poverty. She also made her mark as a land developer in Westlake Hills, Austin. Later, Elizabeth spent 20 years as a taxpayer advocate with the IRS, embodying her belief in equality and opportunity.
Family was central to Elizabeth's life. She married Don Wade in 2001 and enjoyed nine wonderful years together. Several years after Don passed, she met and married John Yeaman in 2014, creating a warm, welcoming home. As a mother and grandmother, she embraced her role wholeheartedly, fostering an inclusive environment for friends, family, and her beloved pets. She loved all animals.
A long-time Austin resident, Elizabeth’s kindness and generosity left a lasting impact on her community. She had a unique ability to make everyone feel valued - even through her hardships, she was always positive.
Elizabeth Yeaman’s life was a tapestry of love, achievement, and compassion. As friends and family gather to celebrate her, they will remember her unwavering spirit and the lessons of acceptance and love she imparted. While her journey has ended, her legacy will forever resonate in the hearts of those she touched.
A memorial service will be held at Remembrance Gardens, 4214 Capital of Texas Highway North, Austin, Texas 78746 at 3 P.M. on December 7th.
