E. Michael Kuhn April 14, 1921 - April 3, 2010 Mr. Kuhn was born in Swissvale, suburb of Pittsburgh, Pa. He graduated from Swissvale high School, was awarded a scholarship to the University of Pittsburgh and graduated in 1943 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering. For his academic accomplishments he received memberships in Sigma Tau, a National honorary Engineering Fraternity and Phi Lambda Epsilon, A National honorary Chemistry Fraternity. Prior to graduation he received an Ensign's commission in the United States Naval Reserve. Following graduation he went on active duty and received officer's training at Cornell University and was then assigned to the Amphibious Force. His amphibious ship, the USS LCI(L)403, landed in the assault wave at Omaha Beach on D-Day. He remained on active duty in the reserve until 1954 at which time he retired with the permanent rank of Lieutenant, Senior Grade. He was a licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Pennsylvania and in 1965 he graduated from the Advanced Management Program of the Harvard School of Business Administration. His Engineering and Business career encompassed Research, Planning, and Manufacturing and in 1979 he retired from ARCO Polymers, Inc., a totally owned subsidiary of Atlantic-Richfield Corporation, as Vice-President of Manufacturing. After two years as a consultant in Petrochemicals, he retired to Lakeway, Texas. He was active in the community in both volunteer and elected positions. He served on the Board of the Lakeway Municipal District from 1986 to 1992 and was elected President of the Board in 1988. He resolved the long-standing controversy of In-District and Out-of-District water rates and authored the District's first Rate Design Manual which is still in use today. He was also responsible for resolving a number of legal problems in out-of-court settlements. For his efforts he received a Meritorious Service Award from the Lakeway Civic Corporation in 1993, "in recognition of service significantly above the normal effort expected." Prior to retirement he lived in Houston, Philadelphia, Boston and Pittsburgh and he served in leadership roles in church and community. In 1952 he was ordained an elder in the Presbyterian Church and for twenty years worked diligently in Christian education and evangelism programs, some of which he originated. He loved music and sang in a number of church choirs. He served on the school board in Brentwood, Pa., and worked on numerous fund drives wherever he lived. He was preceded in death by Annabel, his wife of 53 years. He is survived by Nina, his wife since January 6, 1999; his daughter Michele and husband Jim Zelahy of New Kensington, PA.; his daughter Deborah Malandra and grandson Anthony of Littleton, CO; granddaughters Christen Bovienzo of Oakmont, PA and Jodi Trebilcock and husband Tim of Gibsonia, PA; great-grandchildren Tyler, Tanner, and Madelyn Trebilcock and Dominic and Christopher Bovienzo. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 24, 2010 at the Lakeway Church, 2203 Lakeway Blvd. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to a charity of your choice.
