Douglas C. Jones, of Cedar Park TX, entered into heaven and the presence of his Lord from his home on January 27, 2018, after a long illness, with his loving family and sweet dog Gracie at his side. Doug was 83 years old.
Doug is survived by his three daughters and three son in-laws, Alisa & Bernard Littau of Woodinville, WA, Pamela & David Henderson of Coeur d’Alene ID, and Debbie & Kent Copley of Cedar Park, TX. He is remembered with love by his eight grandchildren plus three of their spouses; Brandon & Kayle Copley, Kyle & Tawny Copley, Zachary Henderson, Joshua and Allison Henderson, Nicole Henderson, Kasey Copley, Matthew LIttau, Kirsten Copley, and one great-grandchild Ellie Copley, plus one more baby on the way. He is preceded in death by his sweet wife Marie Jones of Saratoga, CA, his sisters Elberta Stott of Hayward, CA and Lois Wecks of Cupertino, CA, and his parents Elbert and Paloma Jones of Fremont, CA.
Doug was born on January 5, 1935 in Oakland CA, the third of four children, and the only boy. At the age of 5 he was hit by a truck and sustained a head injury, from which it was thought he might not survive. Not only did he survive, he thrived. Growing up, he enjoyed all kinds of sports and especially liked photography, cycling, and tennis. He worked in his father’s woodworking shop as a teenager and even helped drive the delivery truck, but his passion was engineering—anything related to mathematics, and physics. He loved to figure out how things worked. At 18 he joined the Navy reserve and was offered the chance to become a pilot, but instead decided to send himself to college. He took a train across country to SC and attended Bob Jones University, where he met the love of his life, Marie. In 1956 he traveled to Spain with the Navy reserve on a destroyer escort, and in 1957 he and Marie were married. They moved to the San Francisco Bay area in CA where they raised their family, and Doug had a long and fulfilling career first at a physics laboratory for two years, and then at Lockheed Missiles and Space Company for 40 years. At Lockheed, he worked as a computer programmer and witnessed the birth of an industry. He loved technology and had one of the first personal computers, and one of the first handheld personal calculators. He retired in 1994 and became very passionate about cycling and would ride his mountain bike through the Saratoga mountains on a hilly 10+ mile bike ride daily. He enjoyed RV travel with Marie until she passed away in 2002. Shortly afterward he suffered a stroke and moved to Cedar Park to be close to family.
Most of all Doug loved the Lord and faithfully read the bible. He loved his wife and daughters and all his grandchildren—and his great-granddaughter. He also had a special love for his pets. His hobbies included RC airplanes, boating, fishing, woodworking, photography and home computing. He was a hobby astronomer and a talented handyman. He liked to say that he could fix anything but a broken heart. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor and unique sayings and phrases, his strong voice, his sharp mind, his bright smile, his incredible generosity, and his great heart for God.
