Born on June 15th, 1943, in Brenham, Texas, Donna was the cherished daughter of L.J. and Alma Thiel. Donna's journey in education began at St. Mary's Catholic School and continued at Brenham High School. Although she had a deep love for Brenham, her dreams reached further horizons and she would move on to Houston. She would frequently revisit the town for Maifest, class reunions, visiting family or just to get away and relax at a local bed and breakfast, strolling around town reminiscing of old times. She carried the spirit of her hometown with her throughout her life, embracing her Brenham roots while also embarking on adventures beyond its borders.
She ventured to Houston to start a career in the Mortgage industry where she carved her path, leaving an indelible mark over a remarkable 40+ year career spanning Houston and Austin. Her dedication and expertise were unwavering.
While in Houston, Donna found immense joy and pride in starting a family, an accomplishment she held closest to her heart. In 1980, Austin beckoned her, and she embraced the city wholeheartedly. Her dedication to community was unmatched—she became an active participant in various activities, from dancing at Dallas or the North Forty on weekends to contributing her voice to the River Bend church choir. Donna's home radiated hospitality, where parties were adorned with dance, libations, good food, and laughter. She was an amazing cook and was the holiday cook at family gatherings for our most loved and requested dishes.
A beacon of resilience, Donna overcame breast cancer and became a source of inspiration as a 30+ year breast cancer survivor. She channeled her vibrant energy into various endeavors, participating in the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Walk annually.
A slower pace of life brought her to Leander, where she found solace in building her forever home, a place she called home for 27 years. She was surrounded by dear neighbors and the warmth of her community, Donna embraced every moment in her Leander home. Gardening was her passion, a sanctuary where she could immerse herself in nature's beauty. Her love for pets was evident as she welcomed many furry companions into her life, most notably her cherished papillon dog, “Coco." Gardening, pets, and her patio mornings brought her peace and happiness.
During retirement, she thrived in retail employment, where her vibrant personality and smile touched many. Her impact transcended her immediate family, touching the lives of friends and customers during her retail ventures. Her radiant smile and dynamic personality made her a natural at forging connections. During this time the arrival of her only grandchild Gavin, affectionately called "Pooh baby," brought her immense pride and joy. She especially loved to watch him play baseball. Along the way she would get additional grandchildren in the family who she adored and loved, making it point to make them feel special with surprise hamburger deliveries, special gift from her heart or a big Donna hug.
Survived by her kids, their spouses and family, her son Dean Doyal (Elaine) of Conroe, son Michael Marks (Jackie) of Dripping Springs, daughter Teri Marks-Poirier (Justin) of Leander. Her four grandchildren Gavin Marks, Eric Tindell, Leighton and Maddie Poirier.
Her memory lives on in the hearts of all who knew her—Mom, Grammy, Friend and Cookie—a woman who cherished her family, community, and the simple joys of life. We will miss her and feel so blessed that we were able to spend so many years with her making a lifetime of memories.
