He was born to the late Alvin Hampton and Beulah May Martin on March 12, 1934. Danny grew up in San Antonio, Texas and graduated from Hot Wells High School. He attended A&I University and served two years in the army before moving to Austin, Texas to open Capitol Bowl.
While managing “The Bowl,” Danny met Peggy Joyce Browder. After dating for five months, they were married on August 7, 1959.
After the birth of their three daughters, Danny left the bowling business and became an auditor for the Department of Public Safety. He spent the rest of his career at the DPS and retired in September of 1990. Danny never lost his love for bowling and could often be heard saying, “I’m going to the bowl.”
Danny worshipped and served God and others at Crestview Baptist Church. A favorite verse of His was Joshua 24:15-
“As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
One of Danny’s most enjoyable areas of service was driving a van full of children from the local elementary to the church after school so they could be cared for until their parents picked them up.
Danny loved his family, sports, working in his shop and traveling.
Peggy, his wife of 58 years, and three children: Darlene Grotheim (Dean), Sharon Coker (Cary) and Glenda Rakes (Jim) survive Danny. Danny’s grandchildren, Alyssa Willis (Steven), Daniel Rakes (Kelsey), David Rakes, Bryan Grotheim and Jesse Grotheim also survive him. Family members and friends will miss Danny’s kindness, graciousness and wit.
A private, family graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 12.
A memorial service celebrating Danny’s life will be on Sunday, August 13, 2017, at 2pm at Crestview Baptist Church, 7600 Woodrow Avenue.
Our family would like to thank Dr. Jack Moncrief and the staffs at Wellbound Clinic and Legacy Hospice for their excellent and compassionate care for Danny. We are also grateful for the love, support and prayers of family and friends.
