Bobbye Jean Wilson was born May 6, 1938, to Henry “Jack” C. Hicks, Jr. and Ferril Dale Hicks in Colorado City, Texas. She passed away peacefully at home in Austin, Texas, April 19, 2021, at the age of 82.
Shortly after her birth her family moved to Carlsbad, New Mexico, where she lived until she attended Abilene Christian College. She attended Fox and Lake Church of Christ in Carlsbad where she met and later married her husband of almost 62 years, Charles “Chuck” Wilson.
Chuck and Bobbye began their life together in Pecos, Texas in April 1959. Life quickly changed with the birth of their first daughter, Cynthia, in 1961. In 1962, they moved to Williams, Arizona, where their second daughter, Karen, was born. In 1963 they relocated to Monahans, Texas, where she enjoyed raising her daughters. While in Monahans, she completed her college education with an accounting degree from UT Permian Basin. Chuck’s job took them to Dallas, Texas in 1973, where she received her Master’s Degree in Special Education from Texas Women’s University.
While Bobbye’s teaching career focused on special education and learning disabilities, she was also very involved in the Webb Chapel Church of Christ youth group ministry while her daughters were in high school. Another move brought Chuck and Bobbye to Austin, Texas, and to Westover Hills Church of Christ in 1983.
Although Bobbye retired from teaching public school after 21 years, her love for teaching continued in new ways. She became active in Ladies Bible Class, and wrote a curriculum for and taught English as a Second Language classes at Westover Hills for many years. In her usual quiet way, she continued her “card ministry” by mailing thousands of encouragement cards to Westover Hills members. During her “retirement” years, Bobbye travelled extensively and internationally with Chuck to more than 9 countries on mission trips through Partners in Progress, Baxter Institute and others.
Bobbye is survived by her husband, Charles “Chuck” Wilson; two daughters, Cynthia Lengefeld (Robert) of Sugar Land, TX, and Karen Wilson-Warnock (Dean) of Farmers Branch, TX; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one sister, Jo Nell Henderson (Marland) of Farmers Branch, TX and one brother, Gale Hicks of Moreno Valley, CA.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, April 24, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Westover Hills Church of Christ, 8332 Mesa Dr, Austin, TX 78759. A private family burial will be held at the Houston National Cemetery in the coming weeks.
