On Sunday, February 5, 2017 our beautiful Mother, Grandmother, & Great-Grandmother, Elizabeth “Betsy” Rucker Lloyd joined her late husband after a short painful battle with lung cancer on what would have been their 67th wedding anniversary.
She was born at home in Waco, Texas on October 20, 1932, to William Casseday “Cass” and Gladys Anita (Hardy) Rucker. After being raised on the family farm in the Hillside Community in Lorena, Texas, her family moved to Austin when she was 5 so her father could work on construction of the Tom Miller Dam. Betsy went to Austin public schools, graduating from Austin High School, and attended one semester at the University of Texas.
Betsy met her future husband, Robert “Robbie” Harvey Lloyd, on a blind date, and they were engaged on Betsy’s 17th birthday. They were married Feb. 5, 1950 at University Methodist Church in Austin. Betsy was a member of St. Johns Methodist Church since 1952, where she taught Sunday School & Vacation Bible School for many years.
She worked mainly as a secretary, and was proud to serve Representative Virginia Duff, the Enrolling Room of the Texas House of Representatives, and the Texas Legislative Budget Board from 1953-1990. Betsy worked many regular and special sessions of the Texas Legislature, and was proud to be one of the first employees to use automated machines for typing and later computers. She retired from the Budget Board in 1990 as Office and Records Manager and Board Secretary.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her older sister. She is survived by her younger brother, Pat Rucker, as well as many of her posterity. Her children: Janie (Steve) Howteron, Bob (Carla) Lloyd, Carol (Bennett) Long, & Rick (Tina) Lloyd. Grandchildren: Reeta (Zach) Ricks, Beth (Sam) Delis, Summer (Brent) Wood, Stephanie (Leonard) Novak, Dominic Lloyd, Steven Lloyd, Matt Howerton, T.J. Lloyd, & Corbin Long. Great-Grandchildren: Claire Ricks, Nicholas Delis, Annie Jane Adams, Grace Wood, Joshua Novak, Zachary Novak, Jackson Delis, Chase Delis, & Vivian Wood.
Betsy loved gardening, spending time with her family, genealogy, watching movies, completing crossword puzzles, talking politics, and traveling. She had no problem speaking her mind and always encouraged her family to stand up for what we believe. She often said, “I am going to write a letter…” or “I’m going to call…” for any injustice she saw. She always made good on those promises. She will be greatly missed!
A visitation will be held on Friday, February 10, 2017 at 6:00 pm - 8:00 p.m. at Cook-Walden Chapel of the Hills, 9700 Anderson Mill Road, Austin, Texas. Funeral Services will be Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 3:00 p.m., Cook-Walden Chapel of the Hills Funeral Home.
