She was born April 29, 1929 in Childress, Texas to Bernice and Mamie Stamps. Bernice spoke of many fond memories growing up in this small west Texas town with her younger brother, Don, and her loving Mother and Father. While in school, she was named FFA sweetheart of Childress High School and the spelling bee champion.
Bernice moved to Austin in 1952. In 1955 she met and married her husband, Jerry Fugler. They had two children, Mark in 1956 and Jana in 1957. Her children were her pride and joy! She was a devoted, fun-loving mother and spent her life taking care of her kids and grandkids. She was a very sweet, kind, and sincere person who loved children and was “mom” to many.
In her spare time she loved to crochet, cross stitch, play dominoes and Yahtzee with her kids and grandkids. She was also an avid bowler.
Bernice worked most of her life as a legal secretary and as a secretary at the Texas Employment Commission/Texas Workforce Commission. She worked her way, from a position as a stenographer, to the Commissioner’s secretary. She was known as one of the best in her field. Through her example, her children learned the value of hard work and dedication.
Bernice is preceeded in death by her husband, Jerry Fugler; her parents, Bernice Stamps and Mamie Stamps; her brother, Donald Stamps; and her mother-in-law, Lois M. Fugler.
