Ben Fuelberg of Austin died on August 18, 2010 at Cornerstone Hospital after a brief illness. He was born on December 5, 1916 in the Kuykendall Community of Washington County, Texas. He attended Washington County schools, Blinn College, and the University of Houston. He married Evelyn Reue in St Matthew’s Lutheran Church of Sandy Hill on April 12, 1942.
Mr. Fuelberg enlisted in the National Guard in 1934 and was called to active duty with Troop E, 124th Cavalry in November 1940. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in November 1942 and commanded Troop E during the MARS Task Force Burma campaign in 1944. He continued participation in military activities as a reserve officer until his retirement in 1976 as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Mr. Fuelberg was employed by the Lower Colorado River Authority from December 1945 until 1979. He held several positions in Brenham and Austin and served as District Manager in Johnson City from 1964 until his retirement. He was honored by the Texas Senate for his distinguished military service, his 33 years of service to the LCRA, and his leadership in rural electrification.
Mr. Fuelberg was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters. Survivors include his loving wife of 68 years, Evelyn, his sons and daughters-in-law, Bennie Fuelberg and Jeanie of Dripping Springs, Curtis Fuelberg and Susan Griffith of Austin, brother Walter Fuelberg of Channelview, sister Lillie Sommer of Brenham, brother-in-law Earl Bright of Brenham, sister-in-law Lavonne Reue of Houston, grandchildren Benjamin Fuelberg, Jana Willis and husband Kent, John Griffith, and Laura Orloff and husband Alek . He had eight great grandchildren.
A visitation will be held in Austin at Weed Corley Fish chapel on South Congress from 5:30 until 7:30 Friday August 20. Funeral Services will be held at Brenham Memorial Chapel at 10:30 AM Saturday August 21, with Pastors Lynnae Sorenson and James Abbott officiating. Internment will follow at St Matthew’s Lutheran Cemetery of Sandy Hill.
Serving as pallbearers will be Will Dahmann, Roger Ellermann, Benjamin Fuelberg, Ronald Fuelberg, Lenny Jasinski, David Sommer, Kent Willis, and Paul Yadlowsky.
