Marie had many best friends who viewed her as a sister. Her closest friends were Chayo Vela, Victoria Ramirez, Virgie Ramos, Marie Garcia, Delores (Chita) Demps, and Adela Duran. Marie also had extended family and friends in Monterrey, Mexico, who she loved dearly.
All of Marie’s family held a special place in her heart. She loved looking forward to every holiday, from planning the meals, to baking pies and cookies. For Halloween, she loved to make candy bags for all the kids. Thanksgiving was known for her famous dressing with pecans and raisins mixed in. Everyone looked forward to the dozens and dozens of tamales she would make from scratch, for Christmas Eve. She truly cherished getting to spend the holidays with her kids, grandkids, and great grandkids. She also enjoyed visiting her extended family in Granger, TX.
To her grandkids and great grandkids, she was known as Grandma Bubbas. Her fun nickname came from her oldest grandchild Ashley. When Ashley was a baby, she could only pronounce the word Bubbas, and ever since then, the name has stuck. She was known to everyone as Grandma Bubbas.
Marie loved the country life. She would always reminisce about her childhood growing up on the farm, in Salado, TX. One of her many talents from the farm, was she was able to catch a chicken. Her home in Buda, TX let her enjoy the country lifestyle, as she grew her own fruits with a peach tree, an orange tree, and two fig trees, which she always gave away the fruit to visitors. At Christmas time, every great grandchild got a homegrown orange in their stocking. She also grew onions, potatoes, limes, and even a watermelon. Marie even grew her own tomatoes and chiles to make her famous hot sauce. In her backyard, she raised lots of chickens, and was always willing to share their fresh eggs, to anyone who visited. If you knew Marie, chances are you’ve had one of her homemade tortillas. She loved to make tortillas from scratch, to serve with dinner, or to use in her famous breakfast tacos. She enjoyed cooking for her family and spending time together around the table.
Out of all of Marie’s hobbies, sewing was her favorite. She loved going to Joann’s to buy fabrics, and going to fabric shops in small towns, to find some hidden gems. Her favorite thing to make was a handmade quilt, which she put so much of her love and time into. She has made many many quilts for her family members, friends, babies, and people she admired. She loved incorporating their favorite color into the fabric. On holidays, she would make a holiday themed quilt to use as a raffle prize between her kids and grandkids.
Marie’s other hobbies included camping and fishing, and the occasional trip to Oklahoma, Louisiana or Las Vegas to a casino. She loved the tejano cruise ship she went on with her dear friend Chita. She was a member of the Western Trails Garden Club. She also loved to volunteer at the gift shop at Seton Hays, in Kyle.
Marie was probably the number one fan for the Dallas Cowboys. She was excited for every single game, and always watched while wearing one of her many Dallas Cowboy shirts. Marie was gifted her chihuahua, named Dallas, for Mother’s Day, about 14 years ago, from her daughter Angela. Although she loved the Cowboys, Dallas was actually named after one of Marie’s best friends, also named Dallas.
Marie’s Catholic faith was always a strong part of her life. She dedicated a special time every morning to pray the Rosary and she loved to sit outside in the morning and give thanks to God. To Marie, it was a true honor to be asked to be a Godmother, and she loved all of her many Godchildren. As a parishioner of San Jose Catholic Church, she was a part of many ministries, including the Legion of Mary, St. Vincent de Paul Society, San Jose Landscape Society, and her evangelization community, Fishers of Men. One of her favorite activities was going to various church Jamaica’s around the Austin area. Marie and her friend Chita were referred to as the Jamaica Queens. They’d set up their lawn chairs, listen and dance to live music, eat great foods, and make sure to include time to play bingo. She always loved listening to tejano music and dancing.
Marie loved the last few years spent with her husband Gilbert. They enjoyed traveling, visiting new restaurants, eating ice cream, and spending time with friends. They loved watching sports together, especially football and baseball. Every other week, they met with friends for a fun night of dinner and dominoes. They loved each other dearly.
At her 75th birthday party, she was surrounded by her family and friends, and it was a great reunion for her to see everyone again. Marie was the epitome of a family matriarch. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to all. We will miss being around her, seeing her beautiful smile, and hearing her contagious laugh. We take comfort knowing she is no longer in pain, and is able to reunite with her past loved ones. She will live on in our memories.
The family would like to thank the entire staff at Ascension Seton Hays, especially Dr. Jordan Amadio who preformed her emergency spinal surgery. Thank you to the many doctors who have provided healthcare for her, over the years.
The Christian meaning of death is revealed in the light of the Paschal mystery of the death and resurrection of Christ in whom resides our only hope. The Christian who dies in Christ Jesus is “away from the body and at home with the Lord.” (CCC, no.1681)
