Fred, you were my favourite uncle. From boyhood, I remember your fondness for me.  The feeling was mutual. You gave me books on science.  You introduced me to tropical fish - a hobby of mine for years.  You gave me an old galvanometer from your lab at St. Andrew’s College.  You told me you’d never seen anybody draw a straighter freehand line than me. Once, when visiting mom and dad in Ottawa, I dragged you out of bed at dawn to take me birdwatching - another passion you introduced to me.  Exhausted from a long drive the previous day, you breathed no word of protest.  I was your young nephew, and you happily obliged.  Later in life, I was always welcome at your sanctuary: Whip-poor-will Island. Above all, your devotion to my father as he neared his end will never be forgotten. You always gave more than you received. Rest up, Uncle Fred. Or take a spin in your old, beloved MG.  Our paths will surely cross again. 

So very sorry to hear about Fred's passing. I have fond memories, as a teenager, coming over to see Kristy at St. Andrew's College. Fred was always so warm and welcoming to everyone who came to visit. Such a happy & positive man who inspired those around him to be their best self. We share the same birthday.

Dear Doreen and family. When we received last Sunday the sad news that Fred passed away, it was unreal and hard to believe.

I met Fred when he was in Belgium several years ago and remained in contact with him all those years. Both he, Doreen, Greg and Morag are deep in our hearts. It is difficult to find better people than them!

Last September when I visited Canada, one thing was on top of my wish list and that was to see both Fred and Doreen. I was welcomed like royalty in their house. I still cherish those unforgetable moments and numerous photographs I took!

Dear Doreen and family, we lighted a candle in honour and memory of a great, fantastic, magnificent, ... man who will never be forgotten and will stay in our hearts and memory.

 I truly believe that for almost of the entire time I've known Fred, I have had the opportunity to see him at his best. Even as the years went by, and Fred  wasn't feeling so hot, I still feel that I got his best.....
For, most of the years past, I had really only seen Fred in one place..... Whiporwill ;)
I really don't have one favorite time, moment, or story...there are too many...  I just realize that  i've been blessed with an opportunity to experience comradery, friendship, love, and family in a way that I will forever be thankful.

Fred and I were colleagues for over three decades; he taught Physics and I taught Chemistry.  His efforts in the classroom were exemplary and his contributions to the College were myriad.

Our sincerest sympathy to you and your family.  We had the pleasure of meeting Fred and Doreen on a Cost Rican adventure quite a few years ago.  As luck would have it, good friends of ours here in London have been great friends of Fred and Doreen for years.  It really is a small world......We have been able to keep in touch over the years, having dinner together whenever they came to London or Strathroy. These are two of the finest people that we have ever met, and we will miss Fred's sense of humour, kindness and compassion. Doreen......UNTIL OUR PATHS CROSS AGAIN.....as Fred used to always say to us.

Surprise and sadness at your loss Doreen and family. It has been a long time since I left St. Andrew's (now 36 years), but I still have very fond memories of Fred as a colleague and a person. There were many late nights when he and I and others would be 'forced' together hand writing reports in the old Masters' Common Room. He was intensely dedicated to his students and his subject. Fred was direct. When he had something to say, he would sometimes get into your comfort space and with a glint in his eye give it to you straight. Always knew where you stood with him. And I remember his energy and passion for life -especially about his place on Manitoulin Island which seemed like pioneering in the seventies! Please accept my condolences for your very deep loss.

Dear Doreen, Kristi, Doug, Greg and family. Catherine and I were very sad to hear of Fred's passing from Marke.           ...tough to know where to start as Fred was such a driving force and inspiration in my life and teaching career mentoring/schooling me in the art of teaching and specifically Physics. Still in teaching my students, Fred always comes to mind with any physics connection. For a single colleague in my first teaching position at SAC, you as a couple, made me feel most welcome whether your home or visits to the Island! Fred also introduced me to Scuba, which I am also most grateful for!
I will remember Fred's passion to live life to the fullest, lend a helping hand whenever one looked like they needed support (or a word of encouragement) and brimming with pride when in the thick of things, surrounded by family, initially you his children, but from Doug's recent FB postI saw Fred in his glory surrounded by Grandchildren and wearing his treasured bomber jacket! A picture does tell a thousand words.

My condolences to you all. I only met Fred a couple of times, but I remember spending time at his cottage with Cameron & family. He told me the lovely story of how he met Doreen. Such a kind and welcoming person.

What a wonderful personality this guy was !  I loved his impish smile as one of his most endearing qualities.. I saw it not long ago when I last had opportuity to give him a peck on the cheek that made him smile and that is the way I will always remember Fred as man who loved to laugh and smile with all those around him.  Doreen,Greg (Morag), Kristy (Dave) and Doug (Grace) and grand children to you I send  our deepest sympathy for your loss at this time.  I know Fred left all of you with the most fabulous memories and many life lessons. Only at Fred and Doreens island could I ever catch two fish on one hook and that makes me smile as I honestly don;t know who was more excited me or you Doreen and Fred . For my children he was a very special grandparent and they are all very  saddened but all  will always hold some fabulous memories of many experiences on the island.  Love to you all .. We are so very sad. Our thoughts are with all of you. Fred was, simply put, an amazing man. We've never met anyone as positive. He inspired us to be better people and watching the two of you as a couple made us a stronger couple. Thank you for being so kind to our children, Fred. The "chocolate bird" was so generous to them. And, we will never forget the time you told us that your grass (they they trampled on too often) was like a welcome mat. We will miss you!

Just wanted to say to Doug and the Hiltz family how truly sorry I am for your loss.
 I will always remember the great times at the opening and closing weekends with Fred and the Hiltz family on Nine Mile Lake. He was already ready with the prizes not only for the biggest fish but for everyone involved and always wanted to hear the details of "each" catch down to the littlest detail. A fond memory I will never forget.
