Betty (Elizabeth) Skelly nee Thiessen, who was called “Nan” by her beloved grandchildren departed her loving family on November 13, 2023 at 9:20am. She is survived by her loving husband John Morris Skelly, and her children Corrine Lyn (Wesley); Colleen Dawn (Ken); John Evan JR (Devon). Being a devoted and nurturing mother was her greatest accomplishment.
She and her beloved husband John married April 2, 1960 after a chance meeting at a Halloween party at McGregor Armories in Winnipeg. They had a quick romance and started their family soon after. They lived with John’s parents for a few years and then moved to Ontario with their 2 young girls. Our family moved around a lot around Ontario and spent vacations in California, Punta Cana, Disney, Saint Kitts Nevis, Tijuana, Jamaica, Las Vegas, Bahamas. They built a house in Port Charlotte, Florida that they designed and enjoyed for over 10 years. Family spent many Christmases together at that house.
Betty was born in Manitoba on her grandfather Frank Enns’ farm on February 15, 1940 to John Thiessen and Kathrina Enns. Family was very important to her especially her four siblings who spent most of their lives together. Their father died at a young age and this strengthened their bond throughout their lives. Her brothers John, Harold and Pete and her sister Eve all passed over the last few years and she commented how she missed them and how strange that she was all alone. She especially missed her mother Kathrina who passed in 1999.
Mom had many careers over the span of her life. Among the few were dentistry, interior design where she owned her own store in Caledon called Caledon Country Design. She was so proud that she went back to school to get her certificate in design. She was also so proud that she could be a ‘jack of all trades’ and that she had her own toolbox.
She had 12 grandchildren and they loved her so much that she had a license plate made with ‘Nangod’ on her 1986 Chevy Iroc Camaro convertible. The grandchildren names Steven, Holly, Cassandra, Courtney, Kyle, Kelsey, AJ, Jessica, Bailey, Cole, Charlee and Greyson.
She also had 13 great grandchildren, Isabella, Thomas, Olivia, Ella, Jack, Raylan, Mila, Lily, Riggs, Madelyn, Hudson, Lexi, Owen.
Words cannot express just how much she will be missed by all of her family. Mom/Nan we will miss you and love you forever.
A visitation will take place at Thompson Funeral Home, 530 Industrial Pkwy. South, Aurora, ON on Friday, November 17, 2023 from 2 – 5 p.m.
