Mrs. Helen Gay, 89, entered into the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in the early morning hours on Thursday, March 14, 2019. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, A.P. Gay, Jr. and her precious great-granddaughter Haleigh Grace Gay. She is survived by her two sons, Andy Gay (Cathy) of Augusta, and Mark Gay (Ellen) of Evans; four grandchildren, Jason Gay (Jennifer) of Thomson, Nicole Jordan (Travis) of Lexington SC, Alan Gay (Carla) of Evans, and Marie Davis (Trapper) of Appling; six great-grandchildren, Chase Gay, Ansleigh Gay, Anna Grace Gay, Paisleigh Davis, Jed Davis, and Caleb Gay. She was an active member in her church, Fleming Baptist, until her mobility began to decline in recent years.
Helen was born to Curtis and Lena Tudor of Augusta on August 22, 1929, the tenth child of twelve children. She grew up in downtown Augusta in the Frog Hollow area. In December of 1947, she married Andrew Pilcher Gay, Jr. known by most as “A.P.”. They were deeply devoted to each other and the family that they would rear, and were married for 42 years until his death in 1990.
First and foremost, Helen Gay was a Christian, having put her faith and trust in Jesus Christ at an early age. She loved her home, her family, and her roles as wife, homemaker, Mama, Grandma, and Great Grandma – all of which she did with love, care, and excellence. She loved to cook, work in the yard and garden, and watch “her birds” that visited the backyard. She could mimic their whistles, and they would routinely answer her. Helen loved spending time with her grandchildren, and when they were young, she would often be in the back yard with them playing baseball, kneeling on the ground playing with marbles, playing with jacks, or doing whatever else they wanted to do. Helen loved the simple things of life, and in her wisdom knew that those honest and pure things were the keys to a happy and content life. She enjoyed pleasing others, and had a true servant’s heart. Helen and her sweet spirit will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends.
Funeral services for Helen Gay will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 17, 2019 at the Lumpkin Road Chapel of Elliott Sons Funeral Home, 2524 Lumpkin Road, Augusta, Ga., with Dr. Jonathan Reimer officiating.
