He was born to Louis and Syd Shapiro on September 14, 1924. He attended Richmond Academy, where he was on the Varsity Football team. Upon graduation he joined the U.S. Marine Corps, 1st Division during World War II and served in the Pacific Theater of War.
He attended the University of Georgia and was an avid Bulldogs Fan. Among his many hobbies were golf, tennis, scuba diving and riding his motorcycle. He was passionate about sailing and taught celestial navigation at Augusta State. He was a member of the Walton Way Temple and its Brotherhood.
He leaves to cherish his memory a beloved wife Marian Blanck Shapiro ; his daughter Karen S. Ferree (Jim) of Hilton Head , SC ; his son Donald Shapiro (Vicki) of Augusta; his daughter Lynn Shapiro of Lynchburg , VA and Five grandchildren Ruthie and Leah Meadows , Alex and Nick Shapiro , and Randy Ferree , as well numerous cousins , nephews and nieces.
Graveside funeral services will be held 11 AM, Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at Westover Memorial Park with Rabbi Robert G. Klensin officiating.
