Our beloved Father, Leo R. St. Pierre died at his home in Lewiston on Sunday September 22, 2024 with us holding vigil by his side. He was predeceased by his wife of nearly 60 years, Anne (Demers) St. Pierre. She was his true love and he missed her dearly. Leo passed less than one hour shy of 3 years to the day of her passing.
Leo was born on March 10, 1938, the fifth of seven siblings, to Phillippe and Olivette (Lemire) St. Pierre in Lewiston. He was the last remaining member of his immediate family, and was 86 years old.
Leo began working full time at an early age to help his mother support their family. He was conscientious and diligent in all his commitments. As a youth, he tended the grounds at Saints Peter and Paul cemetery and eventually found employment in the ubiquitous shoe shops of our twin cities. He even owned and operated a maintenance business for several years where he employed most of us for a time. In this way, as he so often did in other facets of his life, he set himself as the prime example of making exceptional effort to achieve high quality results. Like he said, “it’s our name on that work”.
Leo was lastly employed and much respected as a custodian in the Auburn school system for many years. Here he would go to the library to take his breaks and catch up on reading about current and historical events. Even here, he had a positive touch in the lives of so many.
Like Anne, Leo shared a love and talent for music and the performing arts. He had a wonderful singing voice, deep and mellow, though he didn’t often share it beyond the family. He did share his whistling - a talent he learned from his mother, and what a treat. He whistled while he walked or worked - smooth and melodic – he would whistle an entire song - and better than Bing! Hear that whistle and you knew it was Dad. One of a kind.
Leo is remembered for his enduring love and knowledge of team sports, especially hockey and baseball – he played them and he coached them in Sabattus and Lewiston. He was lithe and nimble – quietly elegant. He had a graceful stride whether on the ice, the field or dance floor.
Most of all, Leo was a dedicated family man. Genuinely loving, compassionate and generous. Known for his devotion, the strength of his word and his commitment to others in all he did. He was broad-minded, thoughtful and open hearted. Never hesitated to offer what he could. A helping hand, a welcoming embrace, comfort, support or affection. Like our Mom, Dad was “Dad” to many.
Leo is survived by six children and their spouses, five grandchildren and their spouses, six great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
We were very blessed and appreciate having had you for parents. We’ve learned so much from you. Missing and loving you both.
So Dad – take your bride by the hand and glide away to Glenn Miller, on that “Moonlight Serenade”.
-What a couple!
