Leo Henry Morin, 83, of Lewiston passed away peacefully at Russell Park Manor with his daughter Donna, granddaughter LyAnna and family members by his side on May 6, 2023. Leo was born in Lewiston, Maine on Dec. 15, 1939 to Ludger and Lea Morin and was the youngest of 3 brothers. He attended local schools in Lewiston.
Leo met the love of his life, Venise Goulet, at the Rollerdrome in Auburn, Maine, a popular destination at the time. They married on May 6, 1961. They celebrated 40 years of marriage until his beloved Venise came to get him one hour into what would have been their 62nd wedding anniversary under a full moon to light their way home together.
Leo was a true family man. He had a great sense of humor with sharp wit and enjoyed playing his pranks. The “pet names “ he had for the younger ones have stuck lovingly through the years. In his inner circle of family and friends he was known to be stubborn and was giggled at often for this. He was a storyteller and kept the family on their toes with his colorful punctuations.
Leo became a welder and was employed at Bath Iron Works. He then worked at Lewiston High School as a maintenance man until retirement at which point he worked part-time at St. Peters Cemetery as a groundskeeper where he could visit his loving wife’s grave.
He was a Lewiston native and a true Mainer, enjoying the great outdoors and the simple hard work of a good life. A snowmobile enthusiast, a fisherman, and a hunter, he liked to go to his favorite “hunting grounds” in The Forks, Jackman and Eustis, Maine. He had his time ‘upta’ camp’ but he also enjoyed camping with his wife Venise and daughter Donna at Keoka Beach Campground in South Waterford, Maine. Leo played hockey, a beloved sport in Lewiston and played for a local team. He was a great fan of the Boston Bruins and Bobby Orr but not if his Montreal Canadians were competing.
Summertime was always a great time for the famous and iconic Maine lobster bakes where the family would gather together around steaming pots of lobsters, clams, and corn on the cob - just never forget his blueberry pie. These times are where the storytelling would come out and also where the stories were made.
Leo will be lovingly remembered and very much missed by his daughter, Donna Sanabria of Old Orchard Beach, granddaughter LyAnna Sanabria and partner Jon-Michael Cannon of Portland, grandson Jonathan Taylor ‘JT’ Sanabria of Boston, and brother Maurice of Lewiston, sister-in-law Monique Nadeau and husband Fernand of Kennebunk, Sister-in-Law Donna Goulet of Gorham and brother-in-law Bert Goulet of Sabattus. Along with many nieces and nephews including the Blanchette’s that hold a special place in his heart. Leo was predeceased by his wife Venise, brother Bob and sisters-in-law Wendy Morin and Carmen Morin of Lewiston and Gloria Goulet, of Sabattus.
A special thank you to Russell Park Manor for the final loving care where to no one's surprise Leo was deemed the ‘master of ceremonies’ as he ruled the halls in his final hours. A special thank you as well to the Androscoggin County Home Health and Hospice, an extra special bear hug to Deb Cummings for offering the care any family would dream of, and to the neighborhood watch of Grove Street who always had a light on for Leo.
In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Leo with a donation to a charity of one's choice.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 10 from 5PM to 7PM at The Fortin Group in Auburn. An In- House memorial service will be held on Thursday May 11 at 11AM, followed by a committal service at St. Peter's Cemetery.
