Evan Earl Avery, a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away peacefully on November 10, 2024, at his home in Auburn, California at the age of 87 years and one day old surrounded by his family.
Evan was born on November 9, 1937, in Oakland, California, to Earl Stiles Avery and Hettie Clare Avery (Hoover). He grew up in beautiful Santa Rosa, California. Evan served in the US Marine Corps and was proud of his veteran status. In 1968, he and his growing family moved to Merced, California, where he lived until 2022.
Throughout his life, Evan enjoyed camping, fishing, bowling, photography, and gardening. A great day for him was taking off work early from his job as a State Farm Insurance adjuster to go fishing with his buddies or with his son at Lake Yosemite, Lake McClure, or the other nearby lakes and reservoirs.
Evan is survived by his wife of 62 years Betty Avery (Streiff), his son, Jeff (and Jaymie) Avery of Surprise, Arizona; his daughters: Kristi Sorensen of Byron, Minnesota, Kelly Avery of Rochester, Minnesota, and Janelle Avery (and PJ Markus) of Auburn, California, who, along with Betty looked after him in his later life and to whom we will forever be grateful. He is also survived by his brother Allan (and Anita) Avery of Stockton, California, and many nieces and nephews. Evan was very proud of his 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren into whom he has instilled the value of education as a key to future success.
His love for his family knew no bounds, and his selflessness and generosity touched all who knew him. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy of kindness, responsibility, and devotion to those who adored him will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
In lieu of a memorial service, the family will have a private gathering. If you wish to honor Evan, please plant a tree in his honor or donate to a charity you love.
