Jo Ellen Hardy died on December 4, 2022. Jo Ellen was born on December 30, 1946, in Mississippi and as part of a military family enjoyed traveling with her parents and three sisters to countries abroad. After settling in Gadsden she enjoyed being a stay at home mom for some years while she also served as President of the Gadsden Service Guild and was an active member of the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection. She then attended paralegal school and in 1988 began a fulfilling profession for almost 30 years with Howard Warren and Jim Turnbach and their law firm. She enjoyed spending time with her family, dear friends, Sisters of the Vine reunion group and worshiping with her church family. She was a Daughter of the King and in the past had served her church as Senior Warden, treasurer and member of the Altar Guild. Jo Ellen earned a certificate from the University of the South in Education for Ministry and for years was active in Cursillo.
Her beloved sons Hannon Hardy and Will Hardy and grandson William Hardy preceded her in death. She was also predeceased by her sister Linda. Jo Ellen met the challenges of life with a determined and optimistic spirit. She was a strong woman in her life and faith with a thoughtful and unassuming manner. Her favorite times in later years were spent with her grandchildren in what she laughingly called her “Redneck Riviera.” She is survived by her daughter, Claire Wheeler; Son-in Law, Tom Wheeler; Daughter-in Law Judy Hardy; grandchildren; Carter and Anna Wheeler and Ryan Hardy; sisters Patty Gokey (Rob) and Nancy Fliss (Tom); Brother-in Law Michael Shadwrick; Sister-in Law, Sidney (Bob) Powers, Nieces: Caron Hummer (Savannah & Ben) Libby Fliss (Jo & Maxwell), Carter Powers; Nephews: Matt Gokey (Ann, Sam, Maddie), Alex Fliss and Taylor Powers (Jennifer, Sidney, Lily). The family requests no flowers. Memorials may be made to the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, 113 Brown Avenue, Rainbow City, Alabama.
Service will be held at 10 AM on December 8, 2022 at the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection with Rev. Richelle Thompson presiding. A celebration of Jo Ellen’s life will follow the service in the Parish Hall.
