Mrs. Moore passed away on Wednesday, December 13, 2023 at her daughter’s home. Born in 1927, Evelyn Rosida was the eldest daughter of Winfred Glenn Stewart and Antonia Kargle. Winfred, a coal miner, worked in the coal mines near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 6 days of the week while his wife, “Toni” struggled to keep her family fed during the early beginnings of the Great Depression. By the time Evelyn turned 15, World War II had begun. Her older brother, Wilson, like most able bodied men was shipped to Europe to fight the Nazi Regime of Adolf Hitler. Evelyn helped her mother with her four younger brothers and only sister, Mary, during some of the darkest years of our history. When her older brother suggested to Evelyn that she write to one of his war buddies, Roy Moore, she agreed. From there, several years of correspondence began. At the conclusion of the war, Roy and Evelyn met for the first time at the train station in Pittsburgh and after a short visit, married and traveled to Attalla, Alabama to begin their lives together. Together they raised five children, Roy, Jerry, Nancy, Joey and Toni. Life was never easy for the Moore family as they drifted from house to house, job to job and from state to state. Their children often wore clothing given by others and worked small jobs to help pay the bills, but they were happy. Evelyn and Roy taught their children to love and respect their fellow man, and to honor God with thankful hearts and a humble spirit. Upon Roy’s untimely death in 1967, at the age of 49, Evelyn was left with four children at home as her oldest son went into military service. She never quit or gave up! She was tenacious, loving and always known by “Mama” to not only her children, but by all who knew her. After 96 years, she left her home on this earth and went to her eternal home, never to struggle again. While she is gone, she will never be forgotten. Rest in peace and worry no more! We love you Mama. Your Children.
She is survived by her children, Roy S. Moore (Kayla), Jerry Moore (Rende), Nancy Barksdale (Ricky), Michael J. Moore (Tina) and Toni Martin (Ricky), 14 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews and extended family.
Active Pallbearers will be: Caleb Moore, Tyson Martin, Logan Moore, Dalton Cone, D.J. Cone, Shane Barksdale and Shaun Barksdale.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2023 at Gallant First Baptist Church from 11:00 A.M. until service time at 12:00 P.M.
