Betty Ann McClendon, age 89, passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus at home after a long illness. Betty was the youngest of four children, born to Howard and Nell Copeland. A 1951 graduate of Etowah High School, she started a family and became a housewife and mom. When her children were almost grown, she and her husband Herbert operated McClendon Supply in Steele, AL until their retirement. Betty enjoyed life, cooking from her garden, and being a mom and wonderful Maw-Maw. A longtime member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Gallant, she loved her church family. Betty was one of the best cooks in the South and dining at her table was always a treat.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Nell Copeland, sisters Pauline Conn, Christine Taylor, and brother Rev. Bill Copeland.
She was survived by husband Herbert McClendon, sons Mike (Sandy) McClendon, Phil McClendon, Ronnie (Jennifer) McClendon, and daughter Lisa (Mike) Elders, and also her precious grand and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, as well as their extended families. Special loved ones in her life were her grandchildren, Niki McClendon Bane, Heather McClendon Colvard, Ryan McClendon, Rebekah Elders, Jesse Elders, and Jordan Elders.
Joint service will be held at Bethlehem Baptist Church, Gallant, AL on Wednesday, February 2nd. Visitation from 10:00 to 12:00, with funeral beginning at 12:00. Burial at the church following the service. Services conducted by Bro. Clay Spears and Rev. Donald McClendon. Flowers accepted or donations may be made to Bethlehem Baptist Cemetery Fund.
Pallbearers will be Ryan McClendon, Jesse Elders, Tim McClendon, Jim Mays, Jerry Reeves, Stanley Gilliland, Michael Colvard, and Don Smith. Honorary Pallbearer will be special friend, Jimmy Harrison.
