Bill was born on January 21, 1930 in Somerset, Pennsylvania, to the late William J. and Margaret Griffith.
Bill grew up as the baby of the family, following his three loving sisters, Dorothy, Shirley, and Sara. The Griffith family was raised in a small town where Bill was known as a star athlete. He played several sports but especially took to football and baseball. His love of sports didn’t end in Somerset. He spent fifteen years with season tickets to cheer on the Falcons and was a faithful fan of both the Falcons, and the Braves. When Bill was twenty one, he met the love of his life, then known as Alice Stroh. At the time, he was a Staff Sergeant for the US Army. He fought for our nation in the Korean War and eventually earned a Bronze Star.
Alice and Bill went on to build a beautiful life for themselves and their two loving children. He was a provider and hardworking man for his family. Years ago, Mr. Griffith built his children and grandchildren a house on Lake Chatuge. His grandkids would later call this “The Happiest Place on Earth”. The Lake Chatuge House became a gathering spot for the family where everyone could participate in water sports, boating, and enjoying everybody’s company. If Bill wasn’t down on the water with everyone else, you could find him tending to the yard; by doing so, he earned himself the nickname “Johnny Grass Seed’.
Bill’s beloved family will forever remember him as a cherished husband, father and grandfather. He was one they could always count on to be there cheering them on and supporting at every sporting event, fixing all that was broken; even if only with duct tape, and making sure everyone was cared for.
William “Bill” Llewelyn Griffith is preceded in death by his parents; his three sisters, Dorothy Barnhart (Bill), Shirley Morin (Bob), and Sara Saylor (Fred) and his Sister-in-Law, Madeline Copp (Queve).
He is survived by the love of his life, Alice Stroh Griffith; his children, Amy (Ken) and Scott; grandchildren, Ryan King (India), Michelle King, Tyler Griffith and Kaitlyn Griffith; Brother-in-Law, Kenneth Stroh (Harriet); Sister-in-Law, Kathy Vashaw (Wayne); several nieces and nephews; and cherished friends.
A Visitation for Mr. Griffith will be held on Sunday, November 7, 2021 from11:00 AM - 1:00 PM at H.M. Patterson & Son – Oglethorpe Hill Chapel. A Funeral Service will be held immediately after in the chapel with a Graveside Service to follow at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs, GA.
