Ruth was born in Powder Springs, Georgia to Norine and Hubert Florence on December 15, 1928. When her father was inappropriately sent away to Milledgeville, she, at the age of 12, and her older sister Bobbie, went to work in Atlanta for the phone company. She also attended classes at Georgia State as a young woman and then married Carter Buck LeCraw on October 6, 1950 in Atlanta. She worked as a homemaker, wife and dedicated mother for the remainder of her life. She was enthusiastically involved in her Circle group and the United Class at North Avenue Presbyterian Church. She loved her friends in her bridge and sewing clubs. She loved to say that they didn’t really sew…they just got together!
Her children revered her as a strong disciplinarian, but a dedicated, loving mom with a firm belief in God. Ruth said that, during an extremely difficult time for the family, she received a Divine touch that allowed her to have joy in the midst of her difficulties. As an example of her abiding good humor is how she explained her controversial opinion of evolution, “You may have come from a monkey, but not me!”
She is preceded in death by her first husband, Buck LeCraw, and their precious son Roy. Her second husband Gordon Berry also predeceased her, though she visited him almost daily at his nursing home when he was an invalid.
She is survived by her five remaining children, Dr. Julia Mikell, Carter LeCraw and wife, Dr. Deborah LeCraw, Dr. Florence LeCraw and husband Tom Mroz, Mary Lynn LeCraw, and Sarah Ann Phillips and husband Perry Phillips. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and her one remaining sibling, Lindley Florence.
Special thanks are given to the dedicated staff at Sunrise Senior Living East Cobb who gave such kind are to our dear mom in the last years of her life.
