Raquel Machado Fernandez, 97, returned to her heavenly home on October 1, 2022. Her faith in God was always the source of her Joy, Peace, and Inner Strength. She was born in Victoria de Las Tunas, Cuba on May 21, 1925 to Juan Machado and Cristina González. She was the beloved wife of Jose Ramon Fernandez (deceased), Mother to twin daughters, Cristina Maria (deceased) and Raquel Maria. While in Cuba, Raquel taught elementary school children for many years. She immigrated to the United States in 1968 as a political refugee and settled in Atlanta, GA. Raquel was a member of Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church where she was the Director of the Sunday School program, a teacher, a member of the choir, and President of the Women’s Missionary Union of the church’s Spanish Mission. She worked for Rich’s/Federated Department Stores for over 25 years until her retirement. She enjoyed literature, writing poetry, singing, painting, knitting and travel. Raquel was dedicated to her daughter and to the Lord and will be dearly missed by family and friends. She is survived by her daughter Raquel and two generations of nieces and nephews whom she loved as her own children. Her faith in God, integrity, light and humor will inspire us to be joyful, sing and sow the precious seed of our Lord.
