Nancy Orr Ewing passed away peacefully on December 13, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Nancy was a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend to everyone she has ever met. She was born on September 13, 1941, in Richmond, Virginia to Eloise and Samuel Orr. The family moved one year later to Atlanta where she spent the rest of her life. She attended E. Rivers Elementary School, R.L. Hope Elementary School, North Fulton High School and graduated from the University of Georgia. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, where she developed friendships that have lasted a lifetime.
After graduation from college, she taught 5th grade at Morris Brandon Elementary and later joined Delta Airlines as a flight attendant. Nancy married the love of her life, Morris Ewing, in 1967. They were married for 57 wonderful years until her passing.
Nancy dedicated herself to a life of service for her family, friends and community. She was a loving, supportive mother to Morris, Jenny, Andy, and Wendy. Raising four children required spending hours in carpool lines, at sporting events and helping with homework but Nancy always had a delicious homemade meal for the family each night.
Nancy’s faith was an integral part of her life. She devoted herself to her church communities throughout her life including Wieuca Road Baptist Church, The Cathedral of St. Philip, and Church of the Apostles, where she served as a mentor for Stephens Ministry providing support to other young women. She participated in countless bible studies and lived the gospel by providing love and support to anyone in need. Even as a busy mom, she always found time to volunteer for the Junior League of Atlanta, the Planters Garden Club, the Lovett School, and other community organizations.
Her friendships were a top priority for Nancy. She spent decades sewing with her friends in her “Stitch & Bitch” club, playing bridge with the Brookhaven Bookies, and traveling the world with her Four Seasons Group. One of her greatest joys was baking for her friends and family, especially during the holidays. Anyone battling an illness or going through a hard time could count on Nancy to show up with a full dinner and a delicious pound cake.
Nancy cherished her time hosting weekend getaways at Lake Burton with family, friends and her beloved dogs. She loved sunset boat rides, long walks and picking blueberries, which she turned into the most wonderful cobbler. She greeted each person with a genuine warmth and excitement that was an expression of the love and compassion she felt for everyone in her life. She will be greatly missed by all.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel Jones Orr and Eloise Phillips Orr. She is survived by her husband, Morris Malvern Ewing; her four children, Morris Malvern Ewing, Jr., Jenny Ewing O’Brien (Terre), Andrew Phillips Ewing, and Wendy Ewing Belford (Matt); her three sisters, Eloise Kisgen (Tom), Barbara Bishop (Wayman), Pam Young (Earl); her three grandchildren, Elle O’Brien, Casey O’Brien, Jackson Belford; and many loving nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 31, 2025 at Church of the Apostles at 11am. In lieu of flowers, if you wish to make a donation in her honor, please consider the Church of the Apostles or Adopt a Golden Atlanta, which were both very dear to her.
