Monte William Wolf, 73, of Atlanta, GA, passed away on May 13, 2023 in Bridgeway Hospice at Emory Johns Creek Hospital. During his brief stay, he was surrounded by many loving friends. Monte fought his recurrent cancer with every ounce of strength.
Monte was born to William Raymond and Naomi Crawford Wolf on September 1, 1949 in Whittier, CA. He attended Whittier High School, studied chemistry at University of California, Santa Barbara and earned a Doctorate Degree in organic chemistry at Southern California University.
Monte’s first job was as an inspector in a wiener factory. Not surprisingly, Monte never liked wieners much after that experience.
In 1978, Monte joined the faculty at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta as Professor of Organic Chemistry. During his 36 years at Oglethorpe, Monte’s tough love teaching approach ensured only the brightest and most responsible students received a passing grade. We can thank him for educating countless doctors, nurses and healthcare workers.
Monte was a dedicated marathon runner. Between 1996 and 2003, he completed 14 marathons, with an average time of 4 hours and 30 minutes.
Monte is one of few men that could wear the same tuxedo for over 40 years! He stayed in shape by working out at home and by walking Beaker, his loving yellow lab, 6 miles a day, and then, when each grew older, 3 miles a day.
Monte put his vast knowledge to use with friends in weekly Trivia. When he wasn’t competing at Trivia, he was always a welcome guest at his Goddaughter Keeley’s house.
His relationship with Keeley was symbiotic – she had no father or grandfather and Monte had an unconditional love to give. He was there for every event in her life – small or large. He ensured she receive the finest education possible and he instilled in her his Christian values.
To borrow some quotes, Monte never met a stranger and he always saw the good in others. He delighted in helping others, and he became a friend to everyone he knew, and a best friend to many.
Monte was preceded in death by his parents and sister Marilyn Forst. Monte is survived by his sister, Carolyn King, of Glendale, Arizona.
A visitation for Monte will be held Tuesday, May 23, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at H.M. Patterson & Son-Oglethorpe Hill Chapel, 4550 Peachtree Road Ne, Atlanta, GA 30319, followed by a celebration of life at 2:00 PM.
Memorials may be given to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Dunwoody, GA.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.hmpattersonOglethorpe.com for the Wolf family.
