Mrs. McGaughey, a retired Delta Stewardess, J. P. Allen Wedding Director, and homemaker was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, John “Jack” Cameron McGaughey, a prominent general contractor and builder in Atlanta. She was the daughter of William O. Patterson and Alma Johnson Patterson of Covington, Ga.
She was a graduate of Agnes Scott College where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree, double majoring in Biology and Child Psychology. After graduation she joined Delta Airlines as a stewardess and quickly rose through the ranks to senior stewardess.
Mrs. McGaughey was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta where she taught Sunday School to toddlers for many years. She served as Parliamentarian for the Women of the Church and helped establish the Mission Haven Clothing Closet.
Mrs. McGaughey was a long-time volunteer guide and docent at the Georgia Governor’s Mansion. She was honored by Governor Joe Frank Harris for her long and dedicated service to the mansion.
She is survived by her daughter, Martha Patterson McGaughey of Atlanta and her son, John Cameron McGaughey, Jr. of Atlanta.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 26, 2025, at 2 pm in the Winship Chapel of First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, 1328 Peachtree St. NE Atlanta, GA 30309. The family will receive friends after the service.
