Peggy was born in Dallas, TX, moving with her family to Atlanta in 1953. She was a graduate of Christ the King School, St. Pius X High School and Georgia State University. Peggy’s life was devoted in her service to others. Peggy worked for the American Red Cross and the Department of the Army as a civilian while in Vietnam. She did two tours over three years, then served in Germany. After her brother Stephen was killed in a violent crime, Peggy co-founded the non-profit organization Stop Parole of Violent Criminals (STOPAR), to effect changes in State of Georgia statutes pertaining to the parole of violent criminals.
Peggy adored, and was adored by, family and friends. She offered unfailing love and support to her nieces and nephews. Peggy cherished her many life-long friends, including those from high school who still meet regularly as the "Pi-Hi" group.
Peggy loved being at the beach surrounded by family. A world traveler, book lover, gardener, photographer, and friend to animals, she participated in numerous family and community activities, bringing joy to many people.
Peggy was preceded in death by her father, James John Hynes, mother, Frances Bussey Hynes, and brothers Stephen Lawrence Hynes and James John Hynes,III. Peggy is survived by her siblings and extended family, including, brothers and sisters-in law David and Kay Hynes, of Marietta; Frank and Ann Marie Hynes of Gainesville, GA; Paul Hynes of Atlanta; Joseph and Mary Anne Hynes of Atlanta; sisters and brothers-in-law Catherine Hynes and Melissa McKee of Carmel Valley, CA; Frances and Burton Reifler, of Winston-Salem, NC; Helen and Howard Pharr, of Atlanta; Laura and Robert Keller, of New York City; Julie and Peter Lococo, of Atlanta. Nephews and nieces include David Hynes Jr., Kathleen Makatura, Georgia Connell, James S.Hynes, Caroline Rault, Sean Hynes, Matthew Hynes, Ansley Hynes-Michaud, Audrey Hynes, Jason Reifler, Dana Amato, James M. Hynes, Mary Joyce Wareham, Elizabeth Hynes, Evan Hynes, Kira Hynes, Stephen Lococo and Lawrence Lococo, aunts Catherine Austin, Peggy Starr, Helen Seignious, Mary Gunn, and Ruth Nelson, along with numerous great nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A memorial service celebrating Peggy's life will be held on Friday, September 16th, at 11:00am at Patterson Spring Hill. Family will receive friends before the service at 10:00am. Interment will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, September 17th at Magnolia Cemetery 702 3rd Street, Augusta, GA, 30901. Donations may be made in Peggy’s memory to St. Pius X Catholic High School Library 2674 Johnson Road, NE, Atlanta, GA 30345.
