Margaret Anne Beasley Gray

Margaret Anne Beasley Gray, known to all as Bob Anne, was the eldest of three daughters born in Cheraw, South Carolina on February 15, 1926 to Henry Carrington and Alice Anderson Beasley. She passed away peacefully at Piedmont Hospital on December 28, 2016 at the age of 90. She was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend to many.

In 1943, she graduated as class president and valedictorian from Stratford Hall Prep School in Danville, Virginia. In 1947, she graduated from Randolph-Macon Women’s College in Lynchburg, Virginia with a B. S. in Mathematics. While at RMWC, she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority, Treasurer of the Sock and Buskin Club, right halfback on the Field Hockey Team and shortstop on the softball team.

After graduation, while living in Winter Park, Florida, she met Denver David Gray who had recently returned from serving in the Pacific Theatre of WWII. On June 3,1950,in Cheraw, SC, they were married in a double wedding with her sister Georgia Beasley Orr. After the wedding, they moved to Portland, Oregon where David and Anne were born. In 1959, they transferred back to Atlanta, Georgia and her beloved South. Russell was a born in 1963.

Bob Anne was fiercely devoted to her family. She and Denver never missed a child or grandchild’s basketball game, tennis match, lacrosse game, diving and swim meet, dance recital, cheerleading, horse show, or soccer game. For over 30 years, one of her greatest joys was spending time at the beach with extended family at Debordieu, SC. She also loved her trips to England and Lytes Carey with her two sisters, Georgia and Jane, visiting their friends Jeremy and Biddy Chittenden.

As an avid reader and tennis enthusiast, she spent many hours on and off the court with her tennis “fivesome” the Bonkers: June Bishop, Ann Wilson, Betty June Anderson, and Palmour McIntyre, sharing favorite books and life experiences.

She was a long-time member of Trinity Presbyterian Church and the Cherokee Town and Country Club, a lifelong supporter of RMWC, and a Director of the Palmetto Brick Company.

She is survived by her three children: David Hall Gray and wife Deborah Dever, her daughter Anne Beasley Gray McHugh and husband Robert Christopher McHugh, and her son Russell Anderson Gray and wife Genie Ison. Seven grandchildren survive her: Elizabeth Gray Constantine and husband Walter Wattles Constantine, Alice Beasley Gray Prickett and husband Clay Griffin Prickett, Deborah Hayden Gray, Robert Christopher McHugh, Jr., Margaret Anne McHugh, Abigail Gray McHugh, Isabella Anne Gray, as well as, great-grandchildren Denver Walter Constantine and David Hayes Constantine.

A memorial service is scheduled for Thursday, January 5, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church.
