John Lenoir Westmoreland, Jr. was born on October 30, 1923 in Atlanta, Georgia and died on 5th day of December, 2012. John was the son of Rachel Nunnally Westmoreland and John Lenoir Westmoreland, and was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Nevin Adkins Westmoreland.
John attended R. L. Hope Grammar School and North Fulton High School. He graduated from Emory University School of Business in 1947, obtaining a BBA degree and Emory Law School in 1949 with a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree. While in High School, he joined the S.P.M. Fraternity, the Chi Phi Fraternity at Emory University and the Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity at Emory Law School. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1943 to 1946 training Air-Sea Rescue crews. After graduating from Emory Law School, he joined his Father, John L. Westmoreland and his Grandfather, George W. Westmoreland in the practice of law. He had a long and distinguished career in the practice of law. He was a fearless, astute, skillful litigator in court trials as well as an outstanding legal advisor and counselor in all legal matters. John devoted many years to civic and charitable causes, including Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, American Cancel Society, Multiple Sclerosis Society, Highlands-Cashiers Hospital Foundation and many others. He was a founder of the Atlanta Steeplechase, which now benefits the Junior League Speech School. He was a 55 year member of Kiwanis and served as President of Buckhead Kiwanis Club. He was a 33 degree Honorary Mason and Shriner. He was one of the founders of Scottish Rite Foundation of Georgia which provides funds to enable young people to obtain college educations. He was a founder of Pace Academy. John was a founding member of Cherokee Town and Country Club and Atlanta Country Club. He was a long time member of Highlands Country Club in Highlands, North Carolina, where he owned a home since 1957. He was a life member of Ponte Vedra Club, Capital City Club and Piedmont Driving Club.
John was a member of the Atlanta Bar Association, State Bar of Georgia, Lawyers Club of Atlanta, Atlanta Golf Classic and the Nine O'Clocks. John was an avid golfer and fisherman. He was a member of Peachtree Presbyterian Curch. John was a kind, thoughtful, fun, loving, gentle person, who was truly loved by all who knew him. More than anything, John loved his family and his friends.
John is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy Dunn Westmoreland, his children, John L. Westmoreland III and wife Donna C. Westmoreland, Susan Westmoreland Bloomfield, Anne Westmoreland Howard and husband Lynn F. Howard, his sister Kate Lockett, six grandchildren, John L. Westmoreland IV and wife Torri Westmoreland, Leighton, Brittain and Kelsey Bloomfield, Rachel and Jason Howard, two great grandchildren Amelia and Jackson Westmoreland, step daughter and step son, William and Dorothy Clay Cosgrove, three step grandchildren and nephews.
The body will be cremated. A family memorial service will be held at Arlington Memorial Park. There will be a memorial service in the Kellett Chapel at Peachtree Presbyterian Church at 1:30 pm on Sunday December 9, 2012. The family will be receiving visitors at the Kellett Chapel at 1:00 pm immediately prior to the services.
