John Linus Duffy, Jr., age 62, of Atlanta, Georgia, peacefully left this realm surrounded by loved ones on June 30, 2017, in Palm Beach County, Florida. John’s magnificent life began in Brooklyn, NY, when he was born to Margaret and Jack Duffy on December 16, 1954. Along with his brother, Mike, the family moved to Massapequa, NY, where John’s love of the sea began.
He excelled at many sports, including surfing and lacrosse, and won a scholarship to Adelphi
University on Long Island. After finishing school, John began his career on Wall Street, where his deliberate approach to the Bond Market made him a luminary at Bear Stearns and then Lehman Brothers. Seeking a better way of life for his daughter, Kaitlin, John moved his family to Atlanta, Georgia, in 1989. He continued his career with Lehman Brothers until founding his own company, Municipal Portfolio Managers, Inc., in 2002.
John’s zest for life and generous spirit made him loved by his family, friends, and business associates. His passion for wine, and his desire to share and advance his knowledge of it, led him to become a member of the Confrerie des Chevaliers du Tastevin in February, 2012. John’s athletic spirit continued to be a constant in his life, and he became an accomplished sailor, squash player, and horseman. John met his wife, Sue, in 2015, and they began a beautiful life together that brought together their two families and beloved friends. It is a love story that will never end. Many delightful memories were made in that short time.
John’s unrivaled positive nature was never more evident than it was upon receiving the diagnosis of ALS. He never allowed the disease to define him, and he remained a radiant light in the lives of all who knew him. His ever inquisitive mind led him to research and amass information that will contribute to the end of this devastating disease.
John is survived by his loving family, his wife, Sue Zieler Duffy, daughter and son-in-law, Kaitlin and Blake Snodgrass, stepchildren, Julianna and Robby Robinson, and Andrew Youngerman, and in-laws, Tom and Janice Zieler. He is preceded in death by his parents, Margaret and Jack Duffy, and brother, Michael Joseph Duffy. There will be a celebration of his life on Saturday, July 22, at 3 p.m. at H.M. Patterson & Son-Oglethorpe
Hill Chapel, 4550 Peachtree Road, N.E., Atlanta, Georgia, 30319. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to ALS Worldwide, which advances scientific research and provides free support to thousands of ALS and Motor Neuron Disease patients around the world.
