Hix Howard Green, Junior passed away peacefully at home on January 19, 2017. Hix was born in Jacksonville, Florida on June 17, 1929 to Bertha Snyder Green and Hix Howard Green. Growing up, Hix’s father was with Motors Holding Division of General Motors so the family made frequent moves in the Southeast to Charlotte, Memphis, Atlanta and Dallas. The Green family finally settled in Atlanta in 1940 when Mr. Green’s father purchased Southern Buick Company which became Hix Green Buick Company.
Hix attended grammar school at Morningside, Garden Hills and E. Rivers. He then attended North Fulton High School where he was a Buckhead Boy. He graduated from The Bolles School in Jacksonville, Florida where he found his love for sailing.
Hix graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1952 with a degree in Industrial Management. He was in the ROTC and was a member of Chi Phi Fraternity. Upon graduation, he joined the US Army Chemical Corps and was assigned to the Procurement office in Dallas, Texas. While in Dallas Hix met his true love, Beverly Goff, whom he married in 1954. They celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary this past December 21.
Following their marriage Hix and Bev settled in Atlanta where Hix was employed by Motors Holding Southeastern Division of General Motors. In 1956 he continued his automobile career at Hix Green Buick on North Avenue. He had begun working at the dealership at age 13 sweeping floors in the service department, and continued working during high school and college. During that time he learned about the automobile business from the ground up in the service, parts, and sales departments as Sales Manager, then General Manager, before becoming President in 1968. He was active with the Atlanta and the Georgia Automobile Dealers Associations and is a past President of both. He was also past President of the Buick Twenty Club and recipient of the Buick Select Sixty and Buick Best-In-Class awards on numerous occasions.
Buick was always the heart of Hix’s business. However, during his tenure the dealership sold numerous marques including Rolls Royce, Mercedes-Benz, Austin Healey, Jaguar, Saab,
Alfa-Romeo, and Jeep. In 1975 he built a new award winning dealership facility in Chamblee, Georgia, when dealers began moving from Downtown Atlanta to the suburbs. His ability to see opportunities extended beyond automobiles. He was part of the original team that conceived and developed the Bay Point Resort in Panama City, FL.
Hix was a man of many passions; snow skiing, sailing, hunting, fishing, golfing, and riding his BMW motorcycle on the mountain roads of North Carolina, among others. An excellent shot, Hix enjoyed spending countless hours hunting from South Georgia to South Dakota, Texas to Oregon (and even to Scotland). Whether it was hunting, fishing, golf or just getting away to the mountains, Hix always enjoyed it more when he could share it with friends.
Hix had a passion for aviation. His cousin, Bud Green, was an Air Force Test Pilot. At age 39, Hix took up flying, eventually earning his twin engine instrument rating. He frequently flew his family to Bay Point, Aspen, and Oregon where he enjoyed hunting on horseback with his friends. He later shared that passion with his son Hix III when he purchased a hot air balloon which Hix III flew as pilot in command.
Hix was a member of Peachtree Golf Club, the Piedmont Driving Club, the Nine O’Clocks, and a member and Past President of the Atlanta Homosassa Fishing Club. After he sold his automobile dealerships in 1997, he spent time at his homes at Orchid Island Golf and Beach Club and Wade Hampton Golf Club.
Hix was preceded in death by his parents Bertha Snyder Green and Hix Howard Green and his sister, Jane Green Hollis.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly Goff Green; by his three sons Hix Howard Green III (Debbie), grandchildren Hix Walker Green and Margaret Mattison Green of Atlanta; by his son Ellis Anderson Green (Cathy), grandchildren Ashley Arden Green of Atlanta, Lindsey Lambert Green of Dallas, TX; by his son Robert Barry Green (Amy) of Atlanta, grandchildren Alexandra Calen Green of Cleveland, OH, and Maxwell Boyd Sevier Green of Atlanta.
