Known affectionately as "Dodie" to her sisters and grandchildren, Faye maintained extremely close relationships with her siblings, sharing countless beach trips and holiday celebrations. After attending high school in Anniston, Alabama, she followed her sisters' footsteps to Salem College before completing her education at the University of Alabama, where she graduated in 1957 with a degree in textile engineering.
In 1958, Faye moved to Atlanta to pursue a career as a textile designer, quickly adopting the city as her permanent home. Within a year, she met Fritz Van Winkle, an Atlanta native. They fell in love and married in October of 1960.
Faye and Fritz created a vibrant family life while raising their three children. Their home was always alive with activity, from front yard baseball games to Sunday family tennis matches and seated family dinners each weeknight at 7:00 sharp. They often enjoyed family trips to the mountains and beaches and never missed their children’s and grandchildren’s sporting competitions and activities.
Beyond her dedication to family, Faye pursued various interests with quiet passion. She was an accomplished bridge player and talented oil painter. Faye was a longtime active member of the Ivy Garden Club and St. Elizabeth’s Guild. She maintained a keen interest in the stock market, alternative medicine, and devoted her time to community service through the Junior League of Atlanta.
Faye will be remembered for her kindhearted and modest nature, complemented by her unique and humorous perspective on life, which often caught people by surprise. Her legacy as a loyal friend, devoted mother and grandmother will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.
Faye was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Fritz Van Winkle in 2017 and her two sisters, Euber Roberts Collins of Mobile, Alabama and Peggy Roberts Williams of Auburn, Alabama. She is survived by her daughter Martha Van Winkle Hausmann of Sun Valley, Idaho, and her husband David William, and their son Will (16); her son Alexander Van Winkle of Atlanta, GA, and his wife Elizabeth Crawford Van Winkle, and their three children, Fritz (23), Blair (21), and Eliza (18); and her son Frederick Sloat Van Winkle Jr. of San Francisco, California, and his partner Michael Robert Scheu.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Live Oak Caregivers for their exceptional care and dedication to Faye and Fritz during their final years.
A graveside memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Friday, November 22, 2024, at Westview Cemetery, followed by a reception at 1:00 PM at The Piedmont Driving Club.
