Charles Ernest Brandes

Charles Ernest Brandes, age 90, of Atlanta, Georgia went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, May 25, 2013. Charles ( Chick) was born in Cleveland, Ohio on February 17, 1923 to the late Alfred Brandes and Clara Wlecke Brandes. He was also preceded in death by his brother Robert Brandes and sister Lois Brandes Reidthaler. He is survived by his wife of 67 years and the love of his life Dorothy Clemmons Brandes, daughter Beverly Stith and husband Hugh Stith of Atlanta, , son Richard Brandes of Westlake Village, California, son Dale Brandes and wife Teresa Brandes of Port St. Lucie, Florida, 2 grandchildren Carolyn Stith Thompson and husband Jud Thompson of Marietta, and Dean Hammond Stith of Dallas, Texas, along with 5 great-grandchildren Mac, Grace, Tucker, Cooper and Ella Thompson. After graduation from high school in Parma, Ohio, Chick attended Case Institute of Technology until volunteering to serve his country in the United States Air Corps. He flew B24's with the 449th Bomb Group based in Italy. At the end of WWII he returned home, married, and in 1951 moved to Atlanta to begin flying for Eastern Airlines, a career he truly enjoyed until retiring in 1983. After retirement he began a second career in commercial acting and modeling. Chick spent much of his time enjoying his family , playing golf, traveling, and watching sports, especially his beloved Atlanta Braves and Georgia Bulldogs. He loved music of all kinds and enjoyed playing the piano and singing in church choirs. He was a founding member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in College Park, Georgia where he worked tirelessly in many capacities to successfully help the church grow and thrive. He was a member of the Airline Pilots Association, Retired Eastern Pilots Association, Rivermont Country Club, and Lutheran Church of the Redeemer. In the last 7 years he enjoyed being part of the wonderful Canterbury Court Community. Chick was a man who loved the Lord, his family and many friends, and his country. He was known for his quick sense of humor and deep integrity. He lived his life well and will be greatly missed by all of the many lives he touched. The family will receive visitors Tuesday, May 28 from 6-8 p.m. at Patterson- Oglethorpe Funeral Home, 4550 Peachtree Rd. N.E. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 29 at 2 p.m., Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 731 Peachtree St. N.E. Reception to follow at the church, with burial at Arlington Memorial Park.
