Dr. William Harrell Shuman Jr.

He was born May 13, 1926 in Dublin, Georgia to the late William Harrell Shuman Sr. and Susan Williamson Shuman.

A World War II Navy Veteran, Bill proudly served in Okinawa and Guadalcanal. Bill spent his professional career as an optometrist; he practiced until the age of 93. In 1971, he founded the Society of Professional Optometrists, an organization that still serves through continuing education to this day. He also served on the Board of Optometry for the state of Georgia. Non-professional accomplishments include becoming an Eagle Scout, playing high school football in Dublin, running the Peachtree Road Race until he was almost 60 years old and just being the model of vitality until his last months.

Bill was a fun, energetic and caring person. With sparkling blue eyes, a spring in his step, a mischievous smile and a Georgia cap on his head, he was always eager to go and do, and to spend time with his family and friends; he was always entertaining with jokes and anecdotes. His fun and social nature combined with his nurturing spirit made him a strong anchor for his family. One of his gifts was making everyone feel special.

He was predeceased by two sons, William H. Shuman III, and Robert Parker Shuman; brother, Dr. Robert Charles Shuman and son-in-law, Ted Hermeling.

Survivors include his adored wife, Merlene Shuman; daughters, Kay Hermeling, Deana Frink (Brad), Kathy Adams, Cindy Compton (Tony) and Lisa Nunnally; he also leaves behind several grandchildren and great grandchildren, including a grandson, Walker Roy, who shares his May 13th birthday.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 13, 2023 in the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home. The family will welcome friends at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children or The Salvation Army.
