Born February 9, 1929 in Athens, Georgia to Mamie Glenn Wier and Allen D. Wier, Sr., Virginia was one of three children, Allen D. Wier, Jr. and Betty Wier Hobbs, both of whom preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her son in law, Barry Bailey. Virginia almost lived her entire life in Athens until 2019 when health matters required her to live with her daughter in Woodstock, Georgia.
Virginia graduated from Athens High School in 1945. She went on to attend the University of Georgia, graduating in 1949 with a B.S. in elementary education. She taught 31 years in Athens-Clarke County school system. She was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Athens and a member of Athens Area Retired Teachers Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, Athens Heritage Society and Beechwood Hills Garden Club.
Virginia was married in 1949 to Ted E. Lawrence, Sr. until his death in 1993. She remarried in 1996 to Carl Hedrick of Athens.
Virginia is survived by her son, Ted E. Lawrence, Jr. (Margaret Spence); her daughter, Elaine Lawrence Bailey; stepdaughter, Carla Hedrick Cash; four grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 8, 2024, in the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home with Reverend Frank Granger officiating. The family will visit with guests following the service. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park.
