She was born in Talladega, Alabama on July 6, 1920, the daughter of the late Joseph Oscar and Jewel Simpson Ray of Talladega. She was also preceded in death by her husband George Marshall Coker.
After graduating from Talladega High School, she attended Alabama College, State College for Women, presently the University of Montevallo in Montevallo, Alabama.
Before moving to Athens in 1980 to be near her daughter and family, Virginia was for many years secretary at the Alabama International Motor Speedway in Talladega, presently known as the NASCAR Talladega Superspeedway.
She was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of Talladega where, until her death, was the longest living member of the church.
She is survived by her daughter, Sheryl Kimbrough and her husband, Kim of Athens; grandchildren, Courtney McLarry and her husband, Jason of Atlanta, and Chad Kimbrough of Athens, and grandchildren, Mac McLarry and Kate McLarry.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made the First United Methodist Church of Talladega, 400 East Street, S., Talladega, Alabama 35160.
A graveside service will be held 11:00am Friday, September 20th at Oak Hill Cemetery, Talladega, with the Reverend Jerry Varnado of Athens officiating. The family will receive friends after the service at the cemetery.
