Helen was born in Bamberg, Germany she was the daughter of the late Kunigunda Düering Michel. She moved to the United States in the late 1940's and became a U.S. citizen in 1950. She retired from General Time Corporation, where she worked as an assemblyperson and was a member of the Catholic faith.
Helen was preceded in death by her first husband of 19 years, William T. "Billy" Byrd, of the United States Army, who served during World War II, Korea and Vietnam and by her second husband of 39 years, Jewell Weyman "J.W" Byrd, USGI United States Air Force, Ret., who served during Korea and Vietnam. While married to her husbands, Helen was a devoted military wife, moving with them in all of their deployments and finding work and making a home in their new surroundings.
Helen is survived by her step-daughter, Lisa Byrd Carey and her husband, Chuck of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; brother, Kurt Michel and his wife, Rosie of Bamberg, Germany; sister, Isle Michel of Canada; primary caregivers: sister-in-law, Carolyn Hyatt of Athens; nieces, Faye Daniel Kinney and her husband, Phil of Bishop and Lynn Daniel Curtis and her husband, Mike of Woodstock; as well as many other family members in Germany, Canada and the United States.
A private graveside funeral service will be held Thursday, January 7, 2021 in Evergreen Memorial Park with Dr. Clark Daniel officiating, assisted by Mr. Nathan Curtis.
